    Beta Fireboard Ring fan died.

Bummer that it happened while I was trying to get some ribs on the kettle.

I couldn’t get it up to temp. And I couldn’t feel any air movement, or see the smoke move at the vent. The dips in the graph are from the lid opening while I torched the briquettes; the spike was when I added another full chimney of briqs, then reassembled.

I fired up the BGE. I’m not sure if I can get a replacement fan, though. And I really like this thing. It’s better for ribs than the BGE, IMO.

I hope you can buy one from Fireboard. They are producing them so maybe just a phone call will make it happen.

Mosca When I took the plate off of my ring to check the length of the cable, it sure looks like a standard smoker probe with the 1/2 inch NPT. Check yours and the Fireboard website.

I took it apart and took a photo of the back of the fan. It’s a pretty standard looking part. But all the replacement fans I’ve found (so far) have a slightly different model number, and are rated either 0.15A or 0.25A.

They’re cheap as hell, $1.50 on AliBaba, or I could have one here tomorrow from Amazon for $6.99 with free shipping. I’m not cooking anything on the Ring in the next few days, so I’ll keep poking until I find the right one.

Go with this. Being .05 amps less will actually put less of a load on the wiring/power supply.

Look at this product I found on google.com https://share.google/SN8qxEXIp69Bs8O84

Right, using a fan with less draw will work better. It's just a simple 12V computer fan - but, if you want I can reach out to someone at Fireboard and see if they have a spare fan they can send you?

That would be cool! I certainly don’t mind paying for it; all this stuff hasn’t cost me anything. I did buy a Pulse, and a Spark, and antenna, though!

I'll see who I can get ahold of!

The temp probe went south on me last year. I reached out to Fireboard and they sent me a new one. No charge.

So far I haven't experienced any problems with the Ring. Everything works as it's supposed to. I also "really like this thing" and hope you get the fan problem solved.

Is this a fan, or a blower type unit? When I search the P/N on that fan I came up with this page, of what look like little blowers, not just a computer fan:

If that is the same thing, I would look for something the right size that is still that 10.5 CFM rating, while using the same or less current.

Yeah, that’s them. I just need a vendor for a single unit. I can use that chart to narrow it down.

Yeah it shouldn't be difficult to find something simple that will work. I think this is probably just a simple computer fan, albeit maybe a thicker one with better static pressure. I actually have some units I bought a few years ago that are insane, I was planning on using for a project, VERY good static pressure for a fan-style instead of a squirrel cage or blower unit. But the key is making sure it can be safely and easily driven by the Fireboard 2 Drive unit.

I've reached out to Byron at Fireboard, I'm sure he'll email me back with some more information today, he's pretty good about getting back to me.

Just to make sure it’s the fan, I hooked up a spare Pit Viper. That worked fine, so it’s either the fan or the connector. I’ll spray some contact cleaner into the connector and work that a little bit. Because, y’know?

I’ll give that a shot, too. Thanks.

That is what I use for my FireBoard. The Pit Viper has been solid for over 10 years. Great little fan.

Spinaker The only thing I see is that the Ring has to move the air farther and through a larger channel before it enters the cooking chamber. I’m not up on my fluid dynamics, so I’m not sure if there is any factor that is important, like elasticity or compressibility. But it’s not like I need to have this fixed in the next 20 minutes; I have no plans for any long cooks in the next couple weeks, and the BGE if anything comes up.
