I’ll keep my Fireboard Ring. Much better build quality.

Unfortunately, they’re not releasing them in the US.

I agree, the Fireboard Ring is released in Canada so eventually it will be available in the US. Pretty sure that one of the testers close to Fireboard HQ realdocBBQ is actively participating in some media with them.

If it’s anything like the Weber Searwood or new performer, then Weber does not show the actual temperature but an average temperature they feel like customers want to see. The temperature stays rock solid at 225 and will not show the actual temperature unless it’s 30-40 degrees above and below. I have never liked this feature. I hope the ring gets better reviews.

After seeing the problems with the Smart Performer, I would pass on this.

It's not avaliable yet. I would wait for reviews and opinions. I'm sure our master reviewer will be on it. I like the concept. Just need convincing through solid input/opinions. Ain't cheap. Then there is the other challenge. I won't name her.

                Not YET, officially.

Manufacturing/importing concerns, but that can always change - you know how things go. I think they'll have some of the content we shot coming out soon(ish), I've seen a couple of the short spots for other products and they look pretty good - other than my dorky face and voice. Stephen does a good job with the editing. I believe there will be a sorta-long format video of my cook, like maybe 3-5 minutes. It's a good product, I really wish they could get it produced and available in the US. Maybe sometime...

Meanwhile, I've got 2 of them if anyone around here has a Fireboard 2 Drive and wants to try it out. Maybe some of our members who got the beta units would be willing to loan theirs out as well. The beta and production units are extremely close in form and function.

I haven't looked closely at the Weber, but the quick glance I gave it, I felt the Ring was a superior product, but it does require the external F2D unit.

Buddy of mine has a 26"er, thinking we can fab up something similar in the shop if he gets time and wants to...

I hear the doubts in some of the comments but this could change the game for me. It's not cheap per se, but a kettle premium + this ring would come in at around $500 in the US vs almost double for a Searwood or Genesis. As I'm looking at picking up a new grill and / or smoker anyway it makes a kettle a far more interesting proposition than it was before, especially as I haven't sunk much into temp control accessories to date, other than an SnS insert which I gave away with my old kettle when I moved.

Good thing I've got 3-4 months to decide... Hopefully the review's out by then! 🙏🏻😅

I agree. I did not like drilling a hole in my former Weber performer, but it was a 2011 so I said why not. Well I bought a newer performer and would love to be able to drop this ring on top.

There would be only two reasons for the " ring " component, first and foremost, have an entry point for the fan without drilling a hole in the Kettle. I noticed they have a tube extending down to the charcoal grate ( or what they call in the video , the fuel grate ) to get air right on the coals in place of a " smoke hole " , that SnS puts in their grill.

Second, it would provide more space between meats and the coal fire. That's good for smoking. The Kettle needs that. Radiant heat is an issue with Kettles.

Hopefully this weekend, if I get the Smoke Hole cover from SnS that I have ordered, I will be drilling a hole in my 26. And using my Billows. That's a $15 mod in place of $300 for this Smart Ring. And I can use the Thermoworks app.

And noted at the very end of this vid in the OP, the fella says to unplug your Smart Ring after the Kettle has completely cooled down, which is an issue Tom Horsman is not real happy about on the Smart Performer. I'll let Tom explain that here .

I gotta say, I love my Fireboard Ring. It's practically foolproof and is super conservative on fuel. The big plus with The Ring is that it includes a large heat deflector that covers almost the entire bowl. It's made out of stone like a pizza stone of sort. This enables you to use the entire cooking grate for food without getting any chance of direct heat on the meat. You start the fire in the middle of the charcoal grate and as it cooks, the coals burn outward. I used it one weekend on Saturday and Sunday with one load of briquettes. Ran it the entire weekend from sun up to sundown on both days. Wild.

Last year PitBoss sent me 2 new fans to replace fans i had problems with during the winter.

I was so tired of fsns after cold weather snapping the wires, that i pretty much gave up using fans, even though i had 2 new ones.

I used them maybe 1 time last year and have come to the conclusion, that I want myself to be the smart thing plugged into my kettles.

Not hating on it, i just think maybe we are over complicating cooking, and giving away brain space. I'm probably wrong.

I agree. I have fan controllers, but do not always use them, as precise temp control is not always needed on my cooks. I just need "ballpark" temps for most of my cooking, and can dial that in with vents. I have been using it on overnight cooks at 225, mostly so I can sleep soundly without worrying about the fire going out. If its a shorter daytime only cook, I am much less likely to bother with a fan.

I have temped my home oven several times i think my Weber’s swing less than my oven.

When I first bought a WSM 22 I bought a Pitmaster IQ110 to help me. I used it a couple years before finally succumbing to going without and learning how to control everything manually. That was about 10 years ago and I've never looked back. Heck, I can put a pork butt on before bed and wake up to delicious smoked pork. Temp dials in right around 275 and just stays in that range. No water pan either. Just foil it and use it to block direct heat from below.

Except it has much more smoke flavor and flexibility. I'll grant you that pellet grills are easy to use. Some are easy to clean, others less so. But none of them have the smoke profile of true wood or charcoal + wood chunks.

EDIT: In other words, *NOT* a "pellet grill wannabee" but something else entirely. And entirely better and more flexible for those willing to forego buying just another "Easy Bake Oven" as I once called pellet grills in a conversation over some beers...
