I am thinking of buying the Craycort cast iron grate for my new Weber 22. I just recently bought it, as well as the SnS and I haven't even broken it in with the test run yet, and I see those cast iron grates from Craycort and the impulse buyer in me rears his ugly head and tells me to buy it. But seeing as how I am now a member of this lovely site, I'd like to ask if it's worth buying, and if so should I wait on it while I break in the SnS? Or just get it all from the start?

I have a cast iron grate and have been hesitant to use it as I have heard they are pretty high maintenance. One thing i would recommend buying if your grill didn't come with it is the Weber gourmet bbq system hinged cooking grate that has the hinges on the side to reload charcoal in it AND hole in the center of it for a cast iron insert. More importantly you can use the hole in the middle to drop a cast iron wok into and that works like a beauty. I bought the Weber kettle performer and it came with the grate but I would buy it in a heartbeat if my weber didnt have it!

I did see that smokinfatties, but didn't give it much thought after seeing the Craycort. I will definitely recommend visit that though now that I've read the review MBMorgan showed me

The Craycort grates produce wonderful grill marks if you're into that(I was) but they're a stone be-atch to clean and even more trouble to keep them from rusting or to get the rust off when they inevitably do.
I don't like the Gourmet System grates, either. If you're going to use the inserts they're good but for straight grilling and smoking they suck. They're just 'way too hard to keep clean, too many intersections between rods and rings. My Performer came with them and they're as clean and shiny today as the day they came out of the box because they never got used. My Summit Charcoal came with them with no other option, yesterday I was scrubbing the grate after a cook and the center section flipped up and fell into a pan full of drippings. I now have my first serious barbecue burn. I don't like them. YMMV.
Best,
Bill
P.S. I don't see any issue with using the Craycort grates with the SNS. You'd get some awesome grill marks!

Weber Summit Kamado with SnS and Vortex.. Broil King Baron, Primo Oval Junior. Primo XL. Love grilling steaks, ribs, and chicken. Need to master smoked salmon. Absolutely love anything to do with baking bread. Favorite cool weather beer: Sam Adams Octoberfest Favorite warm weather beer: Yuengling Traditional Lager. All-time favorite drink: Single Malt Scotch
I think I might like the griddle insert for the CC grates, but other than that I probably would pass. I am not a big fan of grill marks. My gasser has cast iron grates, and they don't thrill me at all. I like the versatility of the setup with the CC grates, I will give them that. I do LOVE that hinged grate for adding charcoal to my SnS though!

With Grill Grates available for the SnS mod to a kettle, why would anyone ever buy cast iron grates? Nicely done, David Parrish!

David Parrish Have you seen the Ballistic Griddle they have over there now?? Seems like a winner

I have cast iron on my Weber Genesis gasser. When it was the only grill and I cooked on it 1-3 times a week, the grates practically took care of themselves. Since adding a Performer and a BGE, it gets used 1-2 times a months, so sometimes the grates need a little more TLC. So if you use it often enough, I wouldn't worry about maintenance.Originally posted by smokinfatties View PostI have a cast iron grate and have been hesitant to use it as I have heard they are pretty high maintenance.
Also, if you're like me and don't have any inserts for the center (or aren't using them for a given cook) its worth the $20 to add on a standard grate. The performer has a spot on the back to hook the handle to hang the grate. It really isn't useful to have a place to hang it if the center is just gonna fall out anyway. That bothered me the first time I used it, and I added a regular grate the next day.Originally posted by smokinfatties View PostOne thing i would recommend buying if your grill didn't come with it is the Weber gourmet bbq system hinged cooking grate that has the hinges on the side to reload charcoal in it AND hole in the center of it for a cast iron insert. I've had one set of cast iron grates in my 40+ years of grilling and that was enough for me. Cast iron requires a lot of maintenance, especially of you live in a humid climate, i.e. the Gulf Coast. Cast iron requires a lot of maintenance even if you don't live in a humid climate i.e.Denver.
I'd buy a set of Grill Grates in a second over cast iron. Grill Grates is virtually a maintenance free product compared to the care required by cast iron. I've had a set of Grill Grates for quite some time and hands down, Grill Grates is on the very best grilling products I've ever bought.
My advice would be to get the Grill Grates and forget you ever heard of Craycourt Cast Iron. Just my opinion.

I just got mygrillgrates. Work well. Working on them sticking....practice.
I have a PGS Legacy and its high heat has destroyed every other metal grate, Heavy grade sns, enamel, cast iron all rusted. The grille grates can't rust there airplane grade aluminium anodized. Expensive, but absolutely worth it..
