I wasn't sure whether to put this in the SnS forum or the Burgers forum, but I love using the SnS so much that I decided to post it here just to once again rave about the thing.
Anyway, about a week ago a friend posted a BBQ Boys video on my Facebook Feed about Beer Can Burgers. They looked incredible and I decided to give them a go the next time I made burgers. As luck would have it, my brother wanted to go out for burgers for his birthday. Being the amazing sibling that I am, I said "Go out? Pssh! Just come over."
So, I wanted to keep these relatively simple since I had never done any sort of stuffed burger before--and I'd never even considered smoking burgers.
Each burger is a half pound of plain ground beef. The pocket is created by basically smashing a beer can down into the center of the meat, then molding the meat around the can. A slice of bacon gets wrapped around it to hold it in place. Then you can put whatever you want into the pockets.
Everyone got caramelized onions. Everyone but me got blocks of cheddar. I got pepper jack and a little too many (yet, oddly, never enough) jalapeños in my pocket.
Used the SnS to get the grill temp up to 300 degrees. Then the burgers onto the grill, over indirect heat. And a few chunks of applewood onto the fire. After about an hour, the meat hit 160 and went straight onto the buns. I was shocked at how juicy they were. I usually hate burgers that get up to the 160 mark, but these were just outstanding.
It was also really interesting getting that taste of applewood in the burger itself. Writing about it is making my mouth water all over again.
Anyway, enjoy the pictures. I highly recommend giving this burger recipe a go. And, as always, I was glad to have the SnS keeping everything at a stable temperature while I was able to get everything else ready for the meal.
