Anyone trim their SNS to fit the Weber Summit Charcoal?

Just got my shiny new E6 - woohoo! Already have a SNS, so I can't bring myself to pay $150 for the low profile version. While the slight 1/4" or so offset of the grate doesn't really bother me at the moment, I'm curious if it'd be easy to trim it to make it fit for OCD purposes. I have the old 2.0 version with the non-removable water tray.

Has anyone out there successfully done this? If so, what tool/blade did you use? I already have an angle grinder, jigsaw, hacksaw, etc. and am comfortable using them. Just didn't want to put any blade to the SNS without knowing beforehand that all would work out well.

I have not done this. However, i would use an angle grinder with an abrasive cut off wheel. I would make sure I have it securely clamped down and secure, with no movement prior to grinding anything. If you can, set up a straight edge to work from and make sure to wear glasses, at the very least......better yet, a face shield while grinding.

Honestly, I would leave it until your OCD gets so bad you can't take it anymore. That SNS is built well, with high-grade stainless, cutting it will not be super easy.

Yep, I think I'm going to go this route and leave it alone for awhile. But it will always be tempting...

Sounds like you have a reason to go buy a plasma cutter, lol!

Those bad boys are cool. I've got a couple of "keggles" (kettles made from commercial kegs with the top cut out) that were cut by spinning the keg past a plasma cutter.

ID:	1178990 I did it to fit my S6 Weber Summit Kamado. I too also had the older SNS 2.0 version with built in water tray and used my angle grinder with cut off wheel to modify it. Works well and at that time they no longer carried the SNS Low Profile version.

Excellent! So no major problems or issues encountered along the way? Pretty straightforward cut?

Straightforward cut, drawing an even line around the SNS was the hardest part including the water tray. Make sure to wear all the appropriate eye, hand protective gear because stainless steel is a messy material when cut. Remember, this voids any warranty you may have had on your SNS.

Would it not be easier to just lower the charcoal grate by 1/4"? Then you still have the full capacity of the SnS

I’m not sure how you’d do that. The grate is held up the same way they are in a kettle with fixed tabs. Maybe I’m missing something.
I’d actually contemplated putting a spacer of some sort under the cooking grate to lift it up and provide clearance that way. I looked around and couldn’t find anything economical. I can’t say I use it in the WSCG that much anyways so I stopped looking.

Yeah, like Andrrr my thought was to add a spacer to lift the cooking grate up a 1/4" or so. But don't have any bright ideas on how to do it yet. Hadn't thought about lowering charcoal grate, but not sure how well that'd work either. All options on the table, but gonna just use it as-is awhile and go from there.

MillerTime I was thinking if I was going to fabricate something that I wanted something in SS which instantly made it more than what I wanted to spend. If you aren’t worried about the eventual rust you could use something made of steel. For a cheap option I also thought of using 4 SS bolts, washers and nuts around the outside but I thought it would look too weird. In the end I just left it as is because the issue with the little extra SnS height really is more a cosmetic one than functional

Andrrr, the 4 SS bolts is kind of what I had in mind for the charcoal grate. And take off the tabs with an angle grinder to get them out of the way. But like you said, doing anything at all is probably more trouble than it's worth.

Steve R. Gotcha. You could use the hardware to hang the charcoal grate below the tabs, precariously I guess, but it would work. I think. My initial thought was I’d rather void the warranty on the SnS vs the substantially more expensive Weber, Much to someone’s dismay I should start a channel showing that the 22” SNS works just fine in a WSGC or it’s other variations…. UNLESS you are OCD, then for cripes sake just buy the low profile!!! 😃
