The Cuisinart backyard BBQ cart I have my new monster 143lb Hobart automatic slicer on is not up to the job. It says it is rated for 100 lbs, and it gets pretty wobbly. 2 dinky little plastic wheels on a 1/4" rod aren't going to hold up very long.
So I decided to break into Spring with my first big project in the shop and make a new cart for the slicer. Also thought I'd get bigger casters and build in some storage for myself for all my various rubs and bins and tubs and such, too. Might as well, right?
So, I spent a couple-three hours on Saturday cutting some angle iron to make shelves and a piece of 3/16" plate for the tabletop. All my metal is stored outside and this stuff has been out in the weather for a long time... so it was a LOT of grinding off rust. Then today I went back out early this morning and spent the whole day cutting the rest of the stuff and welding it all up.
Here's the final product:
The top platform is about 22½" x 32". Around 1" or so smaller on the shelves. Plenty of room to store all my rubs and stuff, The Wife is aggravated that I have bottles of rub, salt & pepper in rub bottles taking up room on our kitchen side table (which is really just storage/counter space anyways) and in bins in the garage as well. lol As my BBQ and meat curing addiction has fully taken hold, I've also got one cabinet taken up with stuff and a lower shelf on a corner organizer as well. It's a lot of stuff. Plus a side-by-side fridge/freezer, a chest freezer and now a new upright fridge in the garage. And then now this new slicer on a cart next to them. lol You know, you gotta have room in the garage for all the OTHER junk families tend to accumulate, and when the BBQ and meat stuff starts invading the 'other junk' space, it becomes a clash of priorities. lol
It's pretty danged heavy duty. Got it home and got it in the garage, moved the slicer over, and only smashed two or three fingers in the process.
That's my full size BBQ tub on the bottom shelf - 18x25. About 13" between the bottom and middle shelf, and about 15" between the middle and top. 5" locking casters, supposedly rated for like... I dunno, 2400 lbs or something silly. But damned solid. I know I could put 400+ lbs on this cart it and would roll like a dream still.
With the full slicer on there, I can lock the 4 wheels and rock on that cart it doesn't move ¼". Not a bit.
So now I've officially 'rung in' the first weekend of Spring and got myself back in the shop, cutting, welding and getting duuuurty (durtier than usual, lol) AND I can get some of this BBQ stuff out of my wife's way and make her happier as well.
All in all, a pretty decent little project.
