Hello all,
My son & his wife have a set of Global knives and they like to cook. They tell me they send their knives out to be professionally. They may have done this once and their knives are very dull.
Id like to get them some trip of knife sharpening system. Is there an electric sharpening system that is recommended?
I fear they’d be intimidated by stones & wouldn’t use them.
What about a steel, ceramic rod, diamond rod?
Looking forward to your advice.
Thanks in advance,
JD
I think the E5 has more versatility and I prefer the belts over the discs. If you want similar angles and functionality but a little more user skill required the Ken Onion is cheaper. https://thekitchenprofessor.com/blog/worksharp-e2-plus
Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
I wouldn’t know about the E5 vs the E2, but based on how you describe your son and his wife, the E5 might be a bit too involved, what with switching bands etc.
I have the Ken Onion, and while it does an AMAZING job at sharpening my knives, every time I think about getting it out and setting it up and using it, instead I just pull out the draw-through and figure I’ll get out the big iron in another month or so. That’s been going on for about a year. So, I think they would actually use the E2.
while I agree there is some extra work switching out the bands, I only sharpen maybe twice a year. I do all my knives then switch bands and do them again. It's not so bad when you do all your knives at the same time.
I don’t mind doing that stuff, it’s just that when I think about the knives needing to be sharpened is usually when I’m slicing a tomato or something! And of course I do a quick draw through, and a couple weeks later….
I use stones, so no opinion on the KO vs Worksharp but... are you sure this is something they'd like and use? If they let their knives go dull because they don't want to send them out but are really annoyed at the dullness (i.e. if it's kind of an inertia thing) that's one thing, but if they just don't care.... you might waste your money.

Although not quite in the same league as Work Sharp or Ken Onion (or my non-electric personal favorite, Edge Pro), ChefsChoice has a line of good electrics that do a decent job, are really convenient and easy to use, and are for those who are just a little less fussy about their knives than some of us.
Achieve professional results with the Apex 4 Kit. Apex model Edge Pro sharpening systems come with water stones, polish tapes, a ceramic hone and much more!
If you don't think they will get into sharpening, a ceramic rod might be better. A few strokes with each knife should at least keep them sharper longer.
