I don't think they are shooting themselves in the foot. The ThermaQ has the different cables and couplers which some folks like and think are better quality than what the ProSeries Probes are that the Dot, ChefAlarm, and Smoke use. On top of that they have some versatility with ThermaQ capabilities. Some folks are still going to prefer this.
IMHO they had to come out with Smoke. They needed to be able to compete with Mavericks, iGrill, etc... Too many BBQers prefer a multi-channel wireless thermometer... And once gateway releases it will definitely be the way to go in my opinion because you will have the best of both worlds with wireless option and smartphone option... as opposed to most other popular thermometers in the bbq world that are either one or the other.
If anything I think this opened up a new market for them... Folks that aren't willing to pay $200+ for a ThermaQ and instead opt for a $60 Mav may be a lot more likely to jump at a $100 Smoke because of the capabilities and quality reputation of ThermoWorks.

I agree. Plus you can monitor two cookers with BBQ temp alarm settings on each. You can't do that with a Maverick, you are stuck with just a "High Food" setting on one. I rarely care about internal meat temp before I have enough bark.
I'm more interested in a Data Logger than something like the ThermaQ.
