    Help Me Decide, Please!

So, I have a FireBoard (2 of them actually) with a drive cable and fan, which I love. It generally works great and I control all of my cooks on the Mini smoker with it. I also use it to monitor, but not control, smokes on the Good One Marshall, the Thermotemp Pro at the vacation house, as well as in the indoor oven and other stuff I can't remember right now. My dilemma is that I'm intrigued by the RFX, especially for things like rotisserie chicken, which admittedly I don't do that often, but sometimes. Do you all think it's with it to buy a single probe RFX bundle for just occasional just?

Dewesq55 I am head over heels in love with my RFX. I got the single probe set up during some sale last year. I also have the combustion and haven’t touched the combustion since. Now I want more probes!

I am pretty good at planning cooks, so I will charge up the brick thing. The probe sits in its little charger (magnet so it’s out of the way on my “cook shelf”). My cooking area is just an ez up, so I will slap the brick (it’s a magnet, too) on the frame and run the wire down to the clip on the grate.

    love love love!

I am with RickyBobby, I started with 2 probes and soon moved to 4 consigning my Meater to my BBQ graveyard drawer of has-beens! Once you have used RFX one probe is never enough and if you bide your times for special offers it is well worth it. 😊

As I type I have a large 4 rib rib roast in the Traeger with multiple RFX probes in, useful for determining temperatures at different depths and I also use multiple probes on say a large turkey to monitor white versus dark meat temp.

I don't have the RFX, but since you already have the Fireboard, why not go with their wireless?

I get your point, but I don't think their technology is up to par with companies like Thermoworks, Combustion Inc and Chef IQ. Their probe only has one sensor for the food and one for the ambient temp. Their thermal range is not as good as the others, by quite a lot. I love my FireBoard 2 but they are a few steps behind the pack on wireless probes right now. Maybe they will catch up in the future, but not at the moment.

I have a FB2D with fan and a pulse, 2-2 piece Combustion Predictive sets, a heatermeater I built myself, and I still bought a 4 piece RFX a couple months ago (and their fan a day later because of another sale). I’m still testing the RFX out, but I’m considering selling the FB and at least one combustion set if not both. I love the completely sealed all metal probes and absolutely love no wires. I’ve barely used my FB since getting the Combustion and RFX. I still love FB, but wires suck and their wireless probe is unfortunately a joke, IMHO. It’s freaking huge, weighs a ton, needs a stupid dongle to work best, and mine broke after just a couple uses somehow.

There are 2 things keeping the RFX from being the undisputed champ of BBQ thermometers IMO. First, no predictive functionality and second (but kinda minor) why is there a base unit that doesn’t display any temps. Like I stuck this dumb box to the (cool) side of my grill, why do I need to hold my phone and open an app to see temps while standing right by it? I definitely want the app for long cooks and tracking, but cooking a steak for 10 mins never leaving the grill, I don’t need to look like a teenager that can’t get away from my phone. Plus, I need my timer for perfect flipping, luckily Apple puts that in the dynamic island while I’m using the app, but you could put a timer on the display too 😏.

All 3 miss a mark in world domination. FB in wireless, Combustion in their chargers/cradles and reliability (already have a dead probe…mostly because of their crappy cradles), and ThermoWorks in what I mentioned above. I’m still leaning towards RFX being the best available now though.

If ThermoWorks sees this, you could also enhance the app to ask you at the start of a cook how long it will likely be and adjust the setting for us on how often to send updates for battery life rather than requiring us to remember each time to check and adjust the setting. Also, make a Apple Watch widget so I can put it on my home screen to get to the watch app quickly when cooking.

If Combustion sees this, redesign the damn chargers/cradles to actually hold the thermometer securely, put some damn magnets on the back, and replace the failed probes that won’t charge for buyers because of the damn cradles. I’m sorry, but there’s no damn way yourselves aren’t annoyed with the damn cradles, no damned way. I’m floored you’ve created three versions of these too and made zero improvements to the biggest issue with them, and you can lose the pocket clip. I’m a major nerd and cannot figure out even an impractical nerdy use for the clip.

If Fireboard sees this, love ya and always will, but I hope you have something in the works for another wireless probe. I’m rooting for you since the beginning. You had this market for a few years with the best product, but failed in wireless.

I was also a FB Kickstarter backer for the first gen unit and upgraded when the FB2 came out. If I buy another expensive pellet grill, it will likely be FB controlled.

glitchy love the comparison…. I agree on the predictive part for RFX. I am not a FB user, so I can’t compare. But if RFX had predictive…. What what?!?! 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼💗

I’m ok with no temps on the RFX base. That’s what the app is for, imho.

I have the 4 probe rfx setup and I love it. My only issue is the depth you have to push the probes into the meat. It can make it tough to use on some stuff, like smaller chicken thighs. On big stuff like chuckies they are great.

I don't mind not having a display on the brick; the app works great. I haven't had any connectivity issues.

I bought MEATER, then Combustion Predictive and finally RFX. RFX is by far the best of all. Thermoworks customer support is top tier.

So I'll be the one to offer outside the trendy suggestions, understanding that we each have our own priorities and we should try to figure out what might be available to meet those. You want a probe with multiple sensors and does predictive? You want the external sensor for ambient readings that will withstand the high temps of open fire? You want a base station that gives you readings and setting options separate from your phone, yet also offers the phone app? You want highly water resistant probes that can be sent through the dishwasher? You want quick charging and good length of charge effectiveness? You want a probe that isn't excessively thick? You want to be able to get reliable reports from the system through thick walled cookers, multiple walls of the house, or long distances? If those are what you're looking for in performance criteria the Typhur Sinc Gold could be the ticket. If you think you need more than two probes in one package or if you lack sufficient memory to remember how long a specific protein in the cooking environments you choose to use and think you need retained logs then it won't work for you despite all the other features. Enjoy...

There are definitely some newer players making compelling products. I did look into the Typhur before going RFX, but for me it was the long term support I could count on in ThermoWorks and being able to add a fan for my WSCG.

I have a FB2 with the wireless probe and RFX with 4 probes. Hands down I use the RFX more often The probes are smaller and it is easy to set up and use. Have Fun!
