    Best overall wireless probe/thermometer package?

Trying to decide what direction I want to head with thermometers. I currently have a Fireboard 2 drive and a 4 probe Combustion Predictive Thermometer package (3 working). I also have a Pit Viper fan, broken Fireboard Pulse, a meater probe, a old school Maverick wireless thermometer, a Heatermeter I soldered and flashed, etc.

Been a Fireboard owner since their KickStarter. Used it primarily through the Fireboard 2 release and I then upgraded to the FB 2 Drive and sold my original FB and drive cable setup. Kept using the FB 2 Drive happily until Combustion Inc. came along. Ordered the Gen 1 Combustion through their KickStarter. Bought a second set when Gen 2 came out - which was a nice upgrade IMO. Rarely use the Fireboard anymore unless I'm using the fan on the WSCG or just using the app to pull data from old cooks (how long does X take to cook on average?)

Anyway, what has me questioning everything is two things. First, one of my original Combustion probes quit charging last month. Trying to decide how to move forward. I don't need 4 probes, however I take 2 to the lake for the summer and leave 2 at home, I don't just leave the old at the lake all year because they'd probably be exposed to -40F temps or worse over the winter.

The tiny bit of sadness about the non-working probe has had me thinking that there doesn't seem to be a perfect thermometer package yet. Fireboard flips a ton of the switches with their units and more so their software. It's been a top notch app and base unit for a long time now. I love the cook history and what you can do there and the reliability. However, I think the Pulse wireless is absolute rubbish. It's way too expensive. It's oddly oversized and heavy (compared to others). It only has one sensor in the tip. Not durable at all, I used mine 2-3 times before somehow the ceramic end cracked and now it's just a paperweight. No idea what happened to it. Did I get it too hot, someone else drop it, I have no clue?

The Combustion thermometers have mostly made me happy so far. I use them way more than I ever used the FB because who wants to hook up wired probes for quick high heat grilling? Plus, I'm not opening the dang lid and probing all the time with my Thermapen making things take longer. The multiple sensors have worked great and made cooking most things perfectly almost a brainless act. However, it doesn't save sessions. I think it can if you save them manually before disconnecting probes, but who remembers to do that when the food is done and they're ready to eat? It's also pretty overpriced, especially when thinking about just trying to replace my one non-charging probe for $150. Plus the one thing I just absolutely despise, their probe docks/chargers are just total garbage. The probes sit in them so loosely that one tiny bump the probe is no longer connected, turns on and goes dead. I don't think they can even stay connected through the act of gently sitting them in a cabinet or the closing of a drawer. You have to charge them every time before you use them pretty much...until they get older and then the battery will no longer charge after it goes completely dead.

So, my question to my fellow pit masters is there a package that checks off everything now versus chasing the innovators constantly the past 6-8 years? Wireless probes with multiple sensors, a good app, session history to search back on, reasonably priced individual probes if I need to replace one or just add on? I've been thinking a little bit about the Thermoworks RFX. I know they'll stand behind it support wise. But how is it's app? Does it have session history? If so, does it auto-save? Can you hook up more than one wired probe (pit and food) if you are smoking a brisket and don't want to worry about battery life?

Are there other newcomers/surprises out there that I'm not thinking of?

I know I should probably reach out to Combustion about the probe just to see what they say, but it just has me thinking about my oversized collection of thermometers that none of which do it all perfectly.

If it were me, i would go back to a 2 channel smoke, and order the pro probes from Fireboard.

no bells, no whistles, it just works as promised.

i am likely in the minority, as i am trying to move my life away from technology and apps.

I can appreciate that Richard, but I actually like the tech. I just don’t get how anyone thought the Pulse was a good design or the 3 different but equally crappy versions of the Combustion cradles/chargers were adequate. I don’t mind pulling out the wired probes for longer cooks though.

Worse case of MTS we've seen around here.

LOL, I totally get it might seem that way, but I really want just one platform that's always ready and a complete platform with both wired and wireless options. I willingly pay for convenience and efficiency.

I read the entire post precisely because I'm in the market for the same thing. I have an older Maverick and a Meater that doesn't seem to be functioning at the moment (though I haven't completely given up on it yet). Will be following.

I think you get the same cloud functionality with RFX as you do with the Signals, and other cloud enabled stuff they have. So I ALWAYS forget to save my session when the cook is done. I just shut off the device.

So when I start another cook, it asks me if I want to save the current session, I simply name it, and then it asks me to start a new session. They're all there in the cloud.thermoworks.com site. I currently have 69 sessions dating back to when I first bought the device.

You can go on the cloud site, rename your sessions, add notes, delete sessions, etc...

I may need to download their app and try to setup an account to check it out, wonder it it will let me see anything without having a device?

glitchy I just access the cloud side of the house via a web browser. I find it's easier to go back after the fact, add notes (typing on a keyboard is much faster for me), clean up sessions I don't want anymore, etc... But yeah, you definitely need to setup an account. It's free, so no big deal. The app part of it, does allow you to do some things with the cloud info, but I think the web interface is quicker and easier. You might find you like the app itself enough not to worry about it, though.

I have a well documented bias against TW and their wireless stuff. I got the RFX with 4 probes for Fathers Day, and had a fair bit of trouble getting it connected to my wi-fi. I've used it a couple of times, but for me it's just so easy to use the FB that controls my LSG pooper that I really don't think about using the RFX until after the fact. When things cool down and I'm doing more deep frying, then the RFX will get a better workout.

The RFX does limit you to one wired probe that is intended to read the ambient temp in the cooker. The other issue with the RFX is that once you use the FB app, the TW app just doesn't cut it. But you are right, FB is way too proud of their wireless system and wants you to pay for it.

Right now I don't think anyone is making a wireless setup that checks all the boxes. 5 years from now, I'm going to guess there are going to be several good choices. I just don't think we are there yet.

briano52 Once I got it connected, it's worked well, but that initial setup took around an hour, and some tweaks to my wi-fi that I don't think should have been required. I don't have enough time with it yet to comment on durability.

You are spot on about TW and their customer service. I've never had a bad interaction with them, and they stay on the problem until it is solved.

WI Bubba your posts are some of my hesitations wondering how polished RFX is.

I have given up on Combustion. I think that I wound up replacing everything under warranty at least once. It seems that I replaced probes a number of times under warranty, and I bought several probes when they upgraded hoping they would be better. I still have one unopened probe...

I think only one of the probes I have used was working when I gave up.

I did switch to the Meater and it works well most of the time. The most irritating thing about the Meater is that I cannot set the alarm for the pull temp. I have to set it to go off so that it will rise to my final temp while resting. I even called them to make sure I hadn't missed something, but I hadn't missed anything important to me.

But more importantly, despite your bad luck, can you tell me the damn cradles/chargers are not the biggest pieces of trash in anything electronics you've ever encountered?

Another thing that irritated me is that you can only charge 1 probe at a time because the chargers don't "stack" like others.

I don’t use my Combustion probe anymore. The RFX works great for me, communicates well in all my cookers.

Uncle Bob do you have this? Is there session history? The product looks nice and the specs look good. The only downside I see is doesn’t look like they get into fans and ATC so would still need two platforms.

I've been happy with my Pulse's. You gotta get the S1G adapter for the fireboard though.

I don't like how thick they are but I use them on anything that isn't thin. Honestly haven't unwound my wired probes in months.

Haven't tried anything else other than the budget ThermPro stuff.

Yeah, I bought the S1G with the Pulse upping the price of something I got 2-3 uses out of. I didn’t notice it was broken for a year or so because I had switched to the Combustion.

glitchy Doh... yeah I noticed the drastic increase in range, kinda crappy it's an upcharge when the probes are already expensive

I've cycled through the Combustion, RFX, Meater, and wired probles from FireBoard and have dealt with each of the companies with issues. My favorite way to monitor my cooking is the wired FB. Used the original version until the case essentially crumbled and love the software and ability to record and reference past cooks. Very reliable and finally bought the FB2. Never looked at their wireless probes because of high cost. Also have their Spark thermometer to use with a single wired proble. Had some glitches and was replaced once. Had to do a bit of arguing to get it done. CustServ=OK. Wired Products A+

    Meater eventially failed.

I liked the Combustion design concept for predictability, but have experienced numerous quality issues that others noted, especially the cradle that never held the proble in place so when you went to use the probe it was dead. I think replaced twice. Lost confidence in the company. CS=A; Products = B

Now using RFX set of 4 along with wired FB2. RFX is a great deal when on sale - about $50 per probe. Has worked well and love the use of AAA batteries in each charger. Had a few issues where some probes didn't connect and called and got great help. Was a battery issue. Have confidence with support from them. CS=A+, Products = A

Thanks for sharing, nice to see someone else down the same journey. I will say that Combustion made me fall in love with wireless probes and it’s sad that once they created the gen 2 probes, the piece you wouldn’t think about in making the purchase decision is the pain point for the system and you’d think they’d have fixed it. I am thinking hard about the RFX and might go all in even though I still love what Fireboard has done and that they’ve really driven competition in thermometers.

What's interesting is I've had so few issues with temperature accuracy, The Combustion cradle was poorly designed without having a more secure means to snap in and retain the probe. As a former prod designer, it was obvious to me when I checked carefully. I never understood how it passed a basic design review or how they shipped it without catching that fatal flaw. I'm sure it must have been very costly.

@glitchy yes I have the Typhur Sinc Gold two probe setup. The connectivity is outstanding, has never dropped a signal and has great distance ability. Temps are accurate and predictive values are good, though adjusts on the fly so only the last short period is of much value, that may be common to all the predictives because of normal cooking variables. It connects even through my LSG offset with a strong signal. The probes charge very quickly, IIRC 15 minutes to full. Their tolerance for high heat makes them good for rotisserie use. I've got Meater + probes that I'll either sell or gift as they aren't in the same ballpark for performance, and are just a tad thicker.

Session history has no value to me, and I don't run a fan system on any cooker except the Spyder Huntsman because that's how it comes equipped. I only use the fan for low temp smoke situations like making smoked peppers for chipotle as an example. Otherwise, I can build and maintain a temp stable fire with just about any cooker I have so don't value the fan capability.

I use the sessions so I don’t have to keep notes. There’s lots of things I cook once or twice a year and don’t remember approximately how long they take. However, the Typhur pricing is pretty reasonable, so might think about getting a pair and just using the remaining combustion probes at the lake.

I have both the Meater 2 (I think it's the 2?) and ThermoWorks' RFX. I love them both but they are different. Meater includes an ambient sensor on their probes, T-Works RFX doesn't since they say it's uselessly skewed, and I get that.

I have a Fireboard 2, but crazy me, it's still in the box unopened because I keep forgetting about it.

Honestly, I resort to the T-Works RFX most.

Once you try the FB, you might struggle with other apps. Their app is super solid. I even have the apple watch widget on my main face. And I would put the user experience with wired probes probably at the top too.

      #13
For those Combustion users who can't keep the probe in the charger, try using a tie from a bread bag to hold it in place. That worked for me, but too many other problems for me to keep using.

If someone is considering combustion and reads this, “the bread bag tie to hold it in place” should be all someone needs to read to not purchase it..

I gave up on anything wireless. I've had Meater, Temp Spike, ThermoWorks plus some Amazon knock off. They work for about six months and then start sputtering... They lose range, or completely quit.

I'm back to just a simple wired probe system again..

I have had the TW RFX wireless for almost a year. On the first use, it took me awhile to get the first connection to my WIFI. I read the instructions again and got it to work. It has been flawless since then. I highly recommend it. It is spendy but worth it for me. Especially for hot grilling where wires will not work and for rotisserie cooking. If you don't really need wireless, the wired probes from TW are highly accurate and reliable. Cheaper too.

briano52 That's where I'm at. The RFX would be perfect for the rotisserie/searing, but most other cases, I'm fine with the Signals and wired probes. I will eventually go for the RFX, but I've got other expenses to worry about first. Just started using my replacement TW probes after 5 years? I think. They hold up well for the cost, IMHO.

I’m gonna give the RFX a shot. Thermoworks has 25% off a single item right now, so pulled the trigger on a 4 probe set. Depending on how much I like it, might try their fan down the road on my WSCG.

I just used my RFX for a steak cook. It was nice to go from the smoker to the flat top without pulling them out. There were no connection issues, so it was a good experience.
