Has anyone here used the RFX for a revers sear steak cook? If it can handle the heat they say it can (1000 degrees) then I should be able to insert it for the front end smoke and leave it in for the sear over charcoal. That would be more convenient than stabbing each steak with an instant read after each flip when I am searing them.

Go for it Jim. ThermoWorks stands firmly behind their gear.
For specific questions, call them. Great company, excellent customer svs.

+1 on this. I regularly leave the RFX probes in when reverse searing steaks. No trouble with the big flames!

Reverse seared ribeyes, probably not 1000 degrees, closer to 700 degrees. No problems.

I bought MEATER, unhappy with the results. I then bought Combustion Inc, unhappy with the results. Finally, after two mistakes bought RFX, couldn’t be happier.
Thermoworks support is top notch. I have a carrying case full of Thermoworks products. I give Thermoworks for gifts to family and friends.

Dan Deter I will toss out something else. Some reviewers knock Thermoworks for having a wired ambient temp probe with the RFX. We all know the reasoning behind why Thermoworks went that way - a probe at the end of the wireless thermometer, one inch or so from the meat, is going to show an artificially low ambient grill temperature. Heck - when I rotisseried my turkey this week, even the dome thermometer on my Weber kettle went from reading 350+ to down below 300 once I dropped 18 pounds of cold meat on the rotisserie. That kettle has the dome thermometer pretty much dead center top, under the handle, right above the turkey - in the "meat shadow". But I know the size of the fire didn't really change, and it eventually crept back up as the cook progressed.

You said you do rotisserie cooks, and for me, I don't even USE an ambient thermometer for spinning turkey or chickens. I pretty much run wide open, and control the heat by how much charcoal I feed the fire, usually banked to once side, sometimes both. So I think on those type cooks, you won't be bothering with the grate probe at all (grate is gone on my kettle when using rotisserie), freeing you to place the RFX gateway anywhere you want.

For other cooks, I personally would have no issue with clipping the grate probe on to monitor smoker temp, and leaving the RFX gateway out at the grill. But having those wireless meat probes sure would be freeing on rotisserie type cooks, and also make it easier with not draping wires across your butt or brisket...

A lot of RFX love here that is probably deserved. I do have the Combustion and I like it. Not sure about the price difference between RFX and Combustion but I think it is worthy of consideration. Excellent customer service and significant improvements made since its launch.

Thanks everyone for the comments and experiences! I think I'm going to put the RFX on my list, and if it doesn't show up for my birthday or Christmas then I'll get it on the next sale I see after that...

I'm a fan , 2 probes. I use the app on my phone. PBJ in driveway, lid on. Me in the living room, kitchen and porch on the couch. Connectivity is not an issue. I don't pay attention to the probe ambient. The wired is just fine. And I place my smoke in as fzxdoc has recommended. And as noted, their customer service is outstanding. I think the starter kit is 20% off.

Reading this thread was very expensive for me today. I have a gen 1 FIreboard and a Combustion gen 2. The fireboard has been great for using multiple probes in a large roast or multiple steaks, and their app is great.

Now looking for multiple wireless probes and FIreboard's wireless offerings are very expensive and don't work with the gen 1 controller. A gen 2 controller is an additional $200.

My Combustion works well after some exchanges (in early gen2 units, the probe pops out of the cradle all by itself and drains the battery.) But buying more probes is also quite expensive.

So today's RFX offering is quite a great deal: a system with 4 wireless probes is about $260. If you sign up for email, they give you an additional 10% off. I doubt their sw is as good as Fireboard's, which I love. Was hoping Fireboard might have a good Black Friday sale, but -alas- it was not very compelling unless you need a free hoodie and a wired probe.

              Nice to have options.

Another RFX vote here, started with 2 probes and now up to 4 which should be enough but it has the flexibility to add many more. The wired ambient probe gives a true reflection of ambient temp unlike the Meater, initially I thought a wired probe was not the ideal solution but as others have intimated Thermoworks logic is sound on this score.

RFX probes have to be inserted deeper into the item you are cooking than my Meater and this makes them unsuitable in a minority of instances (e.g. small fish fillets) so having a reliable alternative means of measuring food temp is useful.

Connectivity and range is way better than the Meater including with a 2.4 GHz WiFi extender that I use.

To me RFX the app isn't the finished article as yet but what you do get is reliable and well laid out, even Thermoworks have said the app is a work in progress. Unlike the Meater there is no predictive cooking times but that is a bit hit and miss in any case and I can live without it.

Having used wired Inkbird (recommended), Meater (wouldn't buy again) and RFX the latter wins by a country mile BUT it isn't cheap! I waited for the deals to come along, typically 20% off but given the RFX is UK developed it pushes my buttons it is cheaper in the US than here in the UK!

Just used my RFX to control my billows to make ribs today on my Weber performer. It got more dialed in the longer it went. Great purchase.

Last month, I learned more about the Thermoworks Cloud. All of my cooks are on the cloud and the graph detail is far better than the app on the phone.

Once ya get to the graph in the Cloud, then highlight it and can zoom in. Example, your graph is in 50* increments. On the cloud, it can be displayed in about as small an increment as you wish. Can take it down to 5* or less.

UPDATE : I contacted Thermoworks about probe #4 not working . They performed a through test on the non functioning probe . Right then and there. I gave them the number engraved on the side and had the gateway on. After a few tests, they made me very happy. They were wonderful on resolving my problem. It's also very nice to speak with a real person based in the USA. A+++++

Shifty, Try the probe in another charge base and also make sure the batteries in them are functioning well. I changed out the batteries in mine to make sure I had that possibility covered too. There is a way to view the battery strength of the probe in the settings. The tech told me the probes need to be clean of any varnish from use, in order to charge. The pamphlet I received said to use a mild abrasive pad with Bar Keepers Friend if needed, and polish to resemble clean grill grates.

Thermoworks customer support has to be one of the best I've ever dealt with. They replaced an out of warranty ChefAlarm that the LCD went bad on. The tech asked me to provide pictures of the unit and after viewing them said it was obvious that I took care of my stuff so she was sending me a new one and didn't need to return the old one.

I really like the RFX, I have the 2-probe version. I like their slim diameter. I have the Meater too and I appreciate its ambient sensor.

The Meater+ was my first wireless. The RFX is my MCS!
See what you folks have done????

I have the RFX and 4 probes. Like everything from Thermoworks, it's built to last and works exactly as advertised.
