    ThermoPro Temp Spike Fail

So I gave in to the intense marketing push and bought a set of these. Actually 2 sets. With the first set, one of the temp probes failed almost immediately. During my first cook with them actually. I contacted the company and they sent me a new set almost immediately. Great customer service. I finally got around to using the replacement set today.

I broke a turkey down and put it on the Bronco. The set up is easy - download the app, pair the base unit, check the accuracy with ice water and boiling water. They were a few degrees off. That was the end of the positive experience.

They claim the range is 500'. I am maybe 100' from the bronco. It constantly lost the connection, and the booster was on the Bronco's shelf. I finally gave up and just shut it down. The bad thing is that i was measuring ambient with my Maverick XR 50 and it never dropped. I guess the lid on the Bronco interrupted the signal? That is not acceptable.

I fell for the next best thing that was cheaper than a Fireboard. We gave it a gold medal in the reviews here; that also influenced me. I guess it just doesn't work with the layout of my house.

The meat probes on my Maverick bit the dust; I should have just replaced them. Actually that is what i am going to do. I am waiting to win the Fireboard here. It is going to happen. Probly in September.

I wanted to try a wireless meat probe for my rotisserie, and I just haven't pulled the trigger because I wasn't sure which product to buy. Plus, my 5-year-old Maverick XR 50 still works great. This is disappointing to hear of your issues. I too have a Bronco.

I got the Meater + on sale appx one yr ago $79.00, specifically for the roti on the gasser. Works great, except when I trans to kitchen oven. Close the door signal is lost. If I want to know( by this time everything should be stable) just go to the oven and crack the door. Never knew how much I hated wires on my temp probes. Still use them to back up the Meater +, it is chugging along just fine. I have a Signals, Smoke a weber x-grill and my thermopen.
I like the Combustion Inc, just cannot justify the expense.

          Is it working off Bluetooth??

I have two boosters pushing my Combustion Bluetooth signal.

I don't trust Bluetooth past the following:

50 linear feet, wall, air with more than 20% humidity, small mammal, spider web with or without trapped insects, glass, plexiglass, movie glass, vehicle, sun rays, moon beams, sasquatch breath, unicorn urine puddle, raccoon crap, grass over 6" tall (darn you Bahiagrass!!!).........

Yeah it is Bluetooth. But my Maverick works just fine on the same Bluetooth network. I did notice some unicorn urine on the deck though...

I have 2 sets of the temp spikes and have had pretty good luck with connectivity so far. There’s one room inside my house that it drops off from my smoker location under a tree out in the middle of my yard. Temps seem to read pretty accurate so far on briskets and pork butts. I’m highly suspect of the 500ft range in a residential setting. Good luck.

I also have two sets of these. They work great for me. I admit that they have limited range but if I place the relay unit properly I can monitor the cook from my LazyBoy. 🤷‍♂️

I tried the TempSpike about a year or so ago for my Bronco and really disliked it. It really struggled to keep connectivity and I really didn’t like the ambient probe being so close to the meat. I’ll stick with my wires for now.

If it makes you feel any better, I get the same performance out of my Meater+ probe (thank you SS). I think it’s just Bluetooth that is so unreliable, as mentioned above. I’ll add unicorn urine to the list, can’t believe I never thought that could be an issue.

On second thought it might have been the sasquatch breath

Hard to beat RF signal. But like the ham or AM radio its prowess just doesn't match up with modern designs and modern uses, aside form just using a dedicated transmitter and receiver like some of us do.

I've had 4 TempSpikes. Bought 3, one stopped connecting with its base. They immediately sent me another, again, good customer service. Didn't use them for most of the last year, fired 'em up a couple weeks ago, one of the 3 won't pair with its booster unit. So I have 2 working out of 4.

Range is similar, maybe 50 feet through the walls of my smoker and a couple walls of the house. Oh, this was in my drum smoker, so thin metal. They're "ok", I guess, not spectacular, but the ambient sensor is useless, always has been.

Yeah the ambient sensor never did get even close to what the Maverick was reporting. I guess if I am sitting on the deck I'll use it. I certainly won't on long overnight cooks.

Mine has been ok within 50-70 feet. Drops when walls come into play. Have a Pulse on order.
