Updated info on the FireBoard Pulse

    #2
FireBoard just announced that the Pulse will control a FB Drive.

In response to overwhelming user demand, we've added Drive fan control functionality to help you maintain consistent grill temperatures with minimal effort.

The Fireboard universe is kind of confusing to me. I’m sure it’s simple and would make sense when I see it and touch it.

I have one. Once the Fireboard drive software is updated, the Pulse external and internal temps show up as 2 of the 6 channels.

To be clear, you can still do 6 wired probes, and the Pulse will show up as 2 more channels, I believe. Can you confirm? Guessing when you've used it you didn't use 6 wired probes, so it only showed the ones you were using and the Pulse showed up as two more channels? I mean, I assume this is how it has to work, since they've said a FB2D can monitor 32 Pulse probes (with the S1G antenna).

I can't confirm. I was just testing the software to make sure the Pulse showed up. I don't foresee ever using more than 6 channels. I will try to play with it tomorrow and see what is shows. I do also have the S1G.

@Mosca @DogFaced PonySoldier @peskelton Here are pictures from my Fireboard app on my phone. I have six probes plugged in and a Pulse connected. The first picture shows the 6 channels with probes plugged in. If I scroll down, I can see the Pulse (I identified it as Pulse Silver). If I have less than 6 probes plugged in, the Pulse appear on one of the 6 channels with ext or int as the title. If I had more Pulses, I assume they would appear by name also.

Got it. So, I can use a FBD2, 6 wired probes, and a dozen Pulses (assuming I wanted to spend $2000 on probes and Pulses)!

Yes indeed. My 2 Fireboards show up as individual devices on the same page with 6 temp slots each. So then the Pulse shows up as an individual device with 2 temp slots. Cool stuff.

The FireBoard unit will display all channels available. There are three buttons on the side of the unit. If you have 6 probes plugged in and also using a Pulse - just click the middle button to see the next page if you're in the 6-tile view.

jlazar I just got my Pulse units today and the S1G antenna. Got it charged and setup. I was wondering if you knew if the antenna rotates. It kind of looks like it will tilt, but when I tried to do that, there is resistance and so I am sure if you can do that. Not a big deal if ir can’t, but the instructions are not clear at all. The startup guide doesn’t even mention the need to remove the thin tape on the probe before you charge it.

Mine was stiff when new but now pretty easily rotates to the top and towards you. It also looks like it would rotate out to the right but I am afraid to try it for fear of breaking it.

I have confirmed with FB support that the antenna is fixed in the 90* position, but did not comment on the rotating upward like your pic shows. Obviously you have done it, so it works!

Maybe it’s not supposed to rotate to the top.

Dunno, but since I don't need to do it, I'll just leave it as is.

Fireboard now has a video on Youtube showing how to set up the Pulse. They show putting the S1G on with the antenna facing you. They don't show rotating -- but it is a video on the Pulse and not the S1G.

If you Google "Fireboard pulse as drive control" this thread is among the search results, so I thought I'd chime in.

I can confirm that you can indeed now use the pulse as the fan control channel for the Fireboard drive.

In my case, the Fireboard arrived with outdated firmware, so I had to update it to the latest version (version 4.1.0, I believe). After that, it works smoothly. The Pulse appears as an option for the control channel and off we go.

I contacted customer support and they pushed the update to my Fireboard unit almost immediately.

Note: I also learned that the firmware update is automatic as long as the Fireboard is turned on EXCEPT it will not update if the fan cable is plugged in. So, Fireboard until on and nothing plugged in... it will update.

You can see which version of firmware you have by pressing and holding any side button, then "Info".

That said, it is very nice to use the Fireboard with only the one wire for the fan itself. A lot less clutter around the pit.

              Hope this helps.
