Which Pit Viper Blower (10 or 25 CFM) Would Be Best for a Fireboard 2 Drive with a Big Joe III

Can anyone offer any advice as to which Pit Viper Blower would work best with a Fireboard 2 Drive in a Kamado Joe Big Joe III? Pit Viper offers a 10 CFM and also a 25 CFM Blower.

Fireboard’s proprietary blower is 20 CFM-I’m not getting that one owing to reports of problems with fitting it to the Kamado.

I have to think the 10cfm fan would be sufficient. If I go through the BBQguru ‘help me choose’ page and tell it I have a similar sized cooker like a Big Green Egg XXL, it shows me combos including the 10cfm fan.

Think about how your kamado works. They are very efficient, and will maintain low and slow temps such as 225 for 18-24 hours on a load of lump. They are low airflow cookers, and for smoking we use them with vents open just a sliver on top.

I use an old PartyQ - basically a controller built onto one of the 10cfm Pit Viper fans - and have no issues with my kamado, which is a model with 22 inch cooking grates. I use the fan for cooks between 225 and 350. Anything above that is usually pizza or searing steaks and I don’t need a fan for those type cooks.

I've used the 10cfm fan with my Big Green Egg for years. Yes, it was a smaller model grill than the Big Joe III, but given how sensitive kamados are with air intake and temps I would bet that the 10cfm will work just fine. The thing is: you don't need a large volume of air being pushed in. I'd rather have it blow air at reasonable speed, letting temps climb slowly so that there's a way for it to dial temps back a bit just in case. Just my 2cents.

I saw on one of the UK sites it says "You can run medium size vertical smoker and extra large ceramic grills."
Your KJ Big Joe III would fit in the "extra large" range. And it also says to use the damper to throttle it down for smaller grills, so I think the 10cfm is ok.

Would be interesting to hear what other pit members recommend.

Go with the 10cfm. I called Pit Viper and they talked me out of the 25cfm for one of my larger cookers. The 10 is fine.
