1st world problems with wired probes....modern day solutions

Twin TempSpike Offer - Up To 60% Off | ThermoPro (buythermopro.com)

Just ordered via their website...routed me to Amazon $103.87 incl Tax (Free Same Day Shipping!)

I was gifted the Meater+ for Christmas and constantly struggling with lost connection.

The lid on Delilah is too heavy and crushes anything with wires...I know this because I ruined one of my probes!
Tried (un-successfully) to run the wire up the drain pipe, probe wire would need to be about a foot longer to work correctly.

    So here we go....
WIll let you know how this works out on my next cook!

    Thanx
    Scott

Do you have gaskets on the lid?

No gasket and no leakage, She is a 24x48 custom. Rig is about 1,250lbs!

Smoked stuff for years without any probe thermometer...so this is not the end of the world.
When I finally got one I did like it; however, can't really use it with "Big D"!!

(not willing to drill into 1/4" plate)

It would be nice if the TempSpike works for me.

With 1/4" steel, I will be surprised if the TempSpike works any better than the Meater did. That thick metal box is one heck of a Faraday cage, meaning it will block signals VERY well.

I had the same thoughts Jim, when I got the LSG, but gave it a shot anyway. I have the Meater + and Block units. I wanted to test for temp zones so stuck 4 units in potatoes. Only one of them failed to get a signal through the metal cylinder (as I was getting usable data from the others I didn't mess with figuring out the why).

Hey - not sure what WIRED thermometers you own, but Thermoworks sells a 1m (3.3ft) extension cable for their Pro series probes:

Specializing in cool, unique and professional temperature tools. Super-Fast thermocouples, thermistors, infrared thermometers, data logging and more.

That would give you the extra length you need to go up the drain. Maybe 2 of them and you can go down the smokestack?

Gaskets would give the wire a good cushion. Someone with an Oxy-Acetylene set up could have a grommet hole in no time.

I appreciate the feedback & ideas....

        1. Will give the temp spike a try ...it is already ordered
        2. My stack is in 2 parts (4 bolts? ): Will consider loosening the bolts and using some Lava Lock or Okie Joe gasket

If you ever change your mind on using wired probes these are a reasonable solution: uxcell Stainless Steel PG7 3.0-6.5mm Waterproof Connector Cable Gland 3 Pcs: Air Tool Fittings: Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific

Drilling mild steel (which probably what your cooker is made of) is not really that difficult. It's easier if you use high quality drill bits. You'll probably need three consecutive sizes; small to more accurately and easily drill the location, medium to enlarge from the small pilot hole, large to achieve the final necessary hole size. Or, if you can find one, a high quality step bit that will give you pilot hole to final hole in one tool.

I installed a bracket to hold a conventional tethered probe thermometer on my LSG a couple days ago using the first method above. Drilling the holes was a snap.

A little smoke leakage don't make no never mind.... personally, I love my temp monitoring so much, I'd drill a hole. Or use some gasket material. Ain't gonna hurt nuthin'.

<edit> I've got numerous thermometers, including the TempSpikes. I like 'em alright, and the booster unit works pretty well. I think you'll get a decent signal to that booster through your 1/4" steel.
