Looking for new thermo/blower set up

    Hi All,

I just rejoined the forum after a long absence. I'm in the market for a new thermometer set up. I've been using the original BBQ guru for years. No wifi, no app, no storing/graphing cooks. Just the DigiQ, a Pit Viper fan, an ambient probe for the smoker cabinet, and that's it for ribs, wings etc. I used the food probes for briskets and butts. My smoker is a Stumps Baby XL.

I could probably get by with just a new blower from BBQ guru, but they are out of stock on the 25CFM which they renamed the Pit Bull. They have smaller 10CFM Pit Vipers, but are out of stock on adapters for my Stumps ball valve. I know I can easily find a threaded 1 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch reducer, but a) I'm not sure 10CFM is enough, and b) it's concerning how many things at BBQ guru are out of stock.

Being honest, replacing the exact fan has a laziness appeal too....I gotten so used to my set up that I know and can repeat exactly the steps from lighting my fire box, when to close the firebox door with the ball valve full open, to what temp I throttle back the valve, plug in the fan and let the DigiQ take over.

But as I mentioned, I have concerns about the support from BBG Guru given how many things are out of stock, and the high end Ultra Q is pricey, and I'd still only have the small blower.

I watched a Youtube Video from Just Grillin in Florida comparing the Fireboard 2 to the Thermoworks Signals. They both look promising....but I have no experience at all with Fireboard, and mixed experiences with Thermoworks. I've owned many of their other products over the years....some good experiences and warranty coverage, and some bad experiences with products dying. So back to Fireboard...it looks like a good product and the blower adapter to my Stumps ball valve seems more robust. But more of the control has to be done through the app. I'm curious if people have found them to be reliable, and how they feel about the app?

And am I missing something else out there for the same purpose?

    Thanks in advance!
    Neal

I use the Pit Bull fan and fireboard on my LSG large cabinet and I'm very happy with it's performance and reliability. I have resently purchase the Fireboard 2 but have not used it yet.

    And welcome back.

I've been using Fireboard and pit viper fans on my all my kettles for probably 5 years now with zero issues. One of them gets used just about every week in that time span.

You're on the right track in your research. A dozen or so years ago BBQ Guru was the top of the heap IMO, still have my original Digi Q though haven't used it in a few years. I really like the performance and quality of the FB 2, and the company seems committed to continuing to stay at or near the leading edge of market need. I'm also a Thermoworks fan but in this arena they're just a tad behind the curve.

Thanks to advice here, and reading through the forums, I pulled the trigger on a FB 2 and replacement Pit Viper. If it wasn't down-pouring buckets here in the Northeast, I'd be out introducing the new guys to Big Baby. But they're going to have to make fast friends, because these ribs are on the menu tomorrow
