    ThermoPro TP-20 vs Maverick ET-732

    Hi,
I received a ThermoPro TP-20 dual-probe thermometer for Father’s Day. I tried it yesterday, and it read about 10-15 degrees hotter than my Maverick ET-732. I had three racks of ribs and the two racks with the ThermoPro probes reached 203°, but the ribs were underdone. The rack with the Maverick probe was perfect when it reached 203°. I’m wondering if anyone else has had this issue

I’d check the temps in ice water and then boiling water to see if you get correct readings. Of course the ice water should be around 33 degrees and the boiling water about 212. Check the owners manual and see how to calibrate the thermometer, or call customer service.

      Ditto. That works for me.

I had a TP20 and it was within 3 degrees of my Thermoworks and Fireboard probes. I did have a few probes fail on the TP units, but replacements are cheap on Amazon, just make sure they fit your model. Though in your case I'd reach out to TP first for warranty replacement.

Depending on where your TP unit was sourced, there was a few counterfeit sellers on Amazon at least.

      Uh oh.

Temping ribs is notoriously unreliable, as getting the probe near the bones gives higher readings. I pull mine when a toothpick slides in with very little resistance. Doing the water test suggested above will tell you if your probe or unit is defective, but ThermoPro makes good stuff.

I used a TP20 for years and it was +/- 5F of my TP instant read thermometer. I’ve since bequeathed it to my son and replaced it with a Fireboard.

As others have said try ice water / boiling water. Customer service is very good at ThermoPro. I have the TP 20 and several other thermometers.
