Congrats! I've never had the privilege of using a Fireboard because I have far too many others, but I've only ever read great things. Especially if you like to track graphs of your cooks.
Exciting!! I have a Thermoworks Smoke and after using for a few years now I do see the advantage of the Fireboard. I could use more temp ports and would love to record the temp over time to get a better feel for lighting my PBC. Shucks I'm almost talkin' myself into gettin' one too! Can't wait to hear how that butt turns out. 🔥ðŸ¿
Since you mention the Smoke and more probes, if you end up not needing the recording/graphing or otherwise don't go for a Fireboard, the Smoke X4 is a wonderful 4-probe version of the Smoke, vastly improved over the regular. Just throwing that out there. Happy cookin'!
Don't forget Thermoworks also has the Signals which is a Fireboard competitor. I was up in the air originally between the two, no pun intended, and to be honest even regretted my purchase at one point, due to a terrible app when the product first launched. They have since fixed the app and I'm a happy Thermoworks customer once again.
Huskee Update: I randomly went to Thermoworks site and they are having a BBQ season sale. I got the WiFi bridge for my original Smoke which will add a graphing utility via phone app. Always a sucker for the low investment add-ons to my situation. Hopefully it works - if the app is any good I think it will be worth $75. For the additional probes I am now holding out for the Combustion Inc wireless thermometer. . .
MsTwiggy, I have a Smoke, and the WiFi bridge. You should not have the problem I had. I've always had issues when they would put out a hardware update, and with the last one, it absolutely refused to complete the step to actually do the update. I contacted Thermoworks several times, and the person I talked with decided with the history I had of the issue, it must have been defective from the start. The Bridge has to be 4 years old, but I sent it postage paid, in and they fixed it under warranty
Smart. Minimal investment to accomplish your purpose is smart in this economy. FYI ThermoWorks has a sale about every 11 seconds, so keep watching their site or their emails when the time comes that you may want something else of theirs, don't pay list unless you just can't wait any longer!
As I said, mine is at least 4 years old. Anything you buy today should come with the update already done. Not to say they wouldn't treat everyone this way, but if he looked at my account he could probably see I have bought a lot of Thermoworks products over the years. It wasn't my one and only purchase.
I, too, have always found Thermoworks to have outstanding customer service.
I have a FireBoard1, and I love it, and would make that same choice over and over again. But I do admit that Thermoworks (I have a whole bunch of their thermometers for my business) easily best FB with their customer service.
Welp the wifi bridge arrived. . . and it needs a firmware update, which I tried to do but I can't seem to tap out the right rhythm to get it to do it . So It's probably going back and I'm back to perusing the features of the Fireboard or forced to wait for an indeterminate amount of time for Combustion Inc to open another round of preorders. rlozinak I am mightily excited for you, I think you made the right call!!
MsTwiggy, very sorry to hear that. Same problem I had. I got mine back, but I haven't had a chance to see if it works the way it should now. Turn around on getting it back wasn't bad, but I'm disappointed. There is no reason they should be shipped without the update at this point.
I finally had the chance to try out the bridge. The first time through the setup I got to the firmware page and thought here we go again, but I don't think it had connected correctly to the wifi. Started over, and it went right through and connected. Seems to finally be working. But I was in St. Louis and stopped by the St. Louis BBQ store and picked up a FB2 just for good measure.

rlozinak BTW, congratulations. Didn't mention it before, but I have a Fireboard 1, that I really like. The Thermoworks Smoke with the radio receiver works good, the wifi has been a problem. If the wifi bridge is supposed to have fixed, isn't, it'll only take a few more swear words and my wife will order the Fireboard 2 for me. I really like the bigger screen. My old eyes have a hard time with the little tiny numbers.
I had a vaguely similar thing happen - I started to get weird gaps in my temps, and then the drive would kick on my blower. The blower would obviously spike my temps.... And to make matters worse, I have a Kamado, so it takes, like, years, to cool it back down. Ruined several cooks that way. Eventually I called FB to chat about it. They offered to figure it out if I sent it in. When I did, they looked and said it was known issues with the board on the initial models.
So they offered to replace the board for $50, or give me a remanufactured FB1 with a 1yr warranty for $80. I was sure I had them where I wanted them then, and asked for credit towards an FB2! Smart, right? Well, they turned me down, flat out! But now I have a new FB1 with a year of warranty and its working great... 🤷ðŸ½â€â™‚ï¸
Hubby was able to get the smoke wifi bridge to update the firmware and since then it's been hassle free. It was annoying having to deal with that - but i have used it a few times since the update and it works seamlessly. No pairing or syncing. The graphing utility only lets you add notes, no pictures, and I wish I could put notes in the graph itself. Fireboard does all that. For $70 I am happy. It's holding me over until my double barrel predictive thermometer from Combustion Inc ships 😎
Enjoy that FB 2! I just got a FB 2 also and what a joy it is to cook with the proper tools! Wish I’d bought it years ago. It’s a great investment and learning tool. Used it for the first time last night on a tomahawk ribeye. It’s great to be able to add notes, conclusions and future recommendations in each cook session description.
I also picked up the CaveTools meat injector and used it for the first time today on my Memorial Day brisket. This quality built device will last forever so I can bequeath it to one of my kids when the fires go out at my house.
A big shoutout to Meathead and his forum disciples for their spot-on reviews and recommendations on both of these products.
