    New Square Dot from Thermoworks

It has two probes and calculates an average temp for the cooker:

I like the idea of the averaging function. That's pretty useful.

I agree and it's got me thinkin' about getting one...

It would be great for adjusting your electric or gas oven.

RonB that is what has me thinking about it too. I could probably figure out the average temp if I watched my Dot or my Smoke and recorded the high and low points once the oven gets to temp, but the average also relies on how long it dwells at the high and low points. I.e. is it a pure sine wave, or does it spend more time high or low? The running 15 minute average function would be super useful for that.

jfmorris - I have a Chef Alarm from Thermoworks and it shows the max/min temps, but not an averaqe temp. And as you state, I don't know if it is a sine wave.

Nice. I do like my dot but 2 probes would make it far more useful. I think they could have come up with a better name like "Thermoworks Square".

Yea, saw that and quickly moved on. It lingers in my mind, thanks for the reminder. Not doing a wine induced purchase.

I am having a hard time coming up with a scenario where’d the average temp would be useful versus a real time temp I’d already get from an existing proble.

Are we all calibrating our ovens or smokers on a monthly basis?

I used a data logger until I fried my wires. Average doesn't mean crap until the cook is over and you are curious. The graphs are nice, but a random glance at any temperature probe reading is all one needs.

I find myself cooking to an "unofficial" average of 2 probes in the PBC, I like the idea of this.

        Thanks for sharing.
