ThermoWorks Silicone Probe Spool - Anyone Have One?
Hello,
Today is the last day of the ThermoWorks inventory reduction sale. I need to order some extra temp probes and was considering getting a couple of the Silicone Probe Spools.
Does anyone have any experience with these? Are they worth the money?
I don't have any. I always thought they would just take up too much space that way. I put some individually in small snack size zip lock bags. I also have their big case, so two just go loose in the pouches in the case.
I have one and should pick up another. The advantage isn't that it untangles the wire, but that it keeps it untangled. A secondary advantage is that, if you get a bright color, it makes them easy to spot in a drawer etc.
I of course love smoked meats of all kinds, but also like quick cooks like chicken portions, pork tenderloins, steak and fish. Really into cooking of all kinds.
My outdoor kitchen has a Lone Star Grillz Adjustable and it is wonderful. There also is a Pit Boss 5 Burner Ultimate Griddle and a Pit Boss Copperhead pellet grill.
There is an outdoor fire pit that has grilling capability and limited Santa Maria-style grill raising and lowering.

I grabbed 2 to try. Can you fit more than one probe on a spool? One use I want to see if it will work for is the 3 temp probe wires I leave hanging out of the probe port in my offset cooker. I'm hoping I can wind the 3 wires around this and leave it on grate.
I have 4 that I bought during another sale. Love them. I don't think they'd hold more than 1 probe. I keep them stuck to the inside of my metal drawer on my outdoor Grilla kitchen. I also bought their silicone trivets too to replace some small crappy ones that weren't holding up that well either. Love those too.
I have quite a few. It is by far the best probe storage system I have tried. And they are magnetic so they stick right on my metal pegboard in the kitchen. Definitely pick some up.
If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
Crap. I was resisting MCS so well the first 4 days of this year. Now I just ordered 5 of these, to hold all my different probes, in a couple different colors (blue for air probes, red for meat probes). Oh well.... I made it almost 5 days without spending money on cooking or BBQ stuff!
I have the Fireboard models. They work very well and hold two probes.
The problem is I hate wires in general, sick of messing with them. I wish they would further perfect the wireless models, still not there and still lack the advanced features of the Fireboard.
I also noticed they are a little cheaper than the ones above.

Current cookers Weber Spirit 3 burner with a full insert griddle added. A 22" Kettle with vortex, SnS and a Smokey Joe. The most recent addition is a Pit Barrel Jr with bird hanger, 4 hooks and cover. ThermoWorks Smoke 2 probe, DOT, 2 ThermoPops and a Thermapen MK4. A Thermoworks RFX Gateway 2 probe meat thermometer.
I have the bulky Fireboard ones, some 3D printed ones from eBay, and the Thermoworks ones. I Like the Thermoworks the best. Seem to be easier to wind and unwind than the hard plastic 3D and far less awkward and bulky than FB originals. I also like the magnets. I bought 3 colors, green for my current FB probes, blue for MAK probes and red for the FB pro probes when I get one.
I ordered three the first sale and then five from the second sale. I really like these especially with the magnet in the middle and the various colors available.
