Makes you wonder if they have a "factory second" pile they use for warranty replacements.

      More like factory fourths!

    Thinking about this.

Is it worth $100 to be reminded of the entire experience every day when I prepare food?

    Absolutely not.

I’ll wait a week or so to see if there are any developments. I suspect there won’t be. But at this point, I cannot be satisfied. Ship me a new board, it doesn’t matter. I’ll still be reminded of this experience every time I use it. Refund my money? Sure, thanks. But it won’t change my experience.

When it gets cold enough that we start using the fireplace for heat, these boards are going into the fire. I don’t need this in my life. I’ll eat the Benjamin.

STEbbq Yeah. Thing is, I don’t even need a cutting board. I just want one. I have a 20 year old walnut board that I got for $15 at a farmer’s market, some kid was making them in shop class and putting them out at his mom & dad’s roadside stand. I just wanted a bigger board, but also one that is smaller than my other Boos; that one is hard to clean because it’s heavy and doesn’t fit in the sink. The holiday is coming up, if someone asks then I have an answer.

I was thinking about using that for firewood as I just fired up the wood stove in the lower level, 35 degrees here. Be sure to take pictures.

I bet they send a replacement board! I’m sure it was a mistake. It happens.

A VERY quick reply from the President of Boos:

      Good morning Tom,

I apologize for the less-than-stellar experience as we definitely hold ourselves to a higher standard.

I spoke with our customer service department this morning, and we will be sending you another board that will meet both our expectations. That said, a member of our team will be reaching out to you today to arrange shipment.

Thank you for reaching out to me directly and please enjoy your new board!

      Sincerely,
      DAMON CHILDERS
      President/CEO

That is an annoying email signature block. Despite that, good on him for his responsiveness. Still shouldn't have been necessary in the first place...

Yeah, the sig card didn’t transfer well from the email. It’s just the logo and the social media links.

Another option Tom. Sell it here here for a good price and donate the $$ to charity.

And the CEO's letter reminds me of an old joke:

A wealthy gentleman was badly bitten by bugs while riding on a certain railway line. Arriving at his destination, he wrote the company an indignant letter and received a prompt reply. It was, said the letter, the first complaint the company had ever had of this nature. Inquiry had failed to reveal any explanation for this unprecedented occurrence. Nevertheless, a number of new precautions were being taken to make absolutely certain such an unfortunate incident never happened again. The letter was signed by a high official of the railway.

The gentleman was well satisfied with this reply and was returning it to the envelope when a slip of paper fell out onto the floor. The hastily scribbled note on it read: "Send this guy the bug letter."

Looks like Boos has been getting their wood from the Home Depot scrap bin. I’ll be skipping their products.

I have to admit that I do feel vindicated. Whether that is the same as satisfied is yet to be seen.

          Wow.

I've made my own cutting boards (walnut & maple end grain mixed), have store bought ones we use, and I don't think I've ever seen a knot like that anywhere. Color variations, sure, but never a knot.

It's like making a cutting board out of knotty pine... Yes, you can do it, but should you? Um no.

I'm assuming if you run your fingertip over that, you'll feel it?

Side note: I have a friend who might possibly start making cutting boards for sale when he retires here soon. He's made more than a few before. I've seen his work, and I'm pretty sure he would NEVER have a board like that in the mix. And he's just a one man show.

At least they're willing to replace the replacement, but man, that never should've made it out the door, letting alone the assembly table.

I also got an apology from my customer service contact, and a follow up email stating that the board will be singled out for inspection before it is shipped.

That says they all are not inspected before they are shipped. Sad.

            #27
I understand that things like a knot on a board shouldn’t happen but in one day they took care of the problem. I look at that as a good thing and just might purchase a cutting board from them. I’ve never heard of them before but that probably has something to do with the rock I live under!

That’s good news Tom. It’s a shame you had to get the CEO involved though. I bet he’s pissed at somebody on his staff. I know I would be. I would also wonder how many defective items were shipped that nobody complained about.

Anyway, I hope you are BOTH vindicated and satisfied in the end.

You know what, I’m not even that pissed about jumping through hoops with the questions about board usage. I’m pissed that they asked the questions, got the answers along with evidence that I have other boards, and other Boos boards, that haven’t warped, and then nevertheless decided that it couldn’t be them, it had to be me. THAT is what ticks me off. And then they ship a clearly defective board… but it’s not them, it’s me.

              #29
Even though they stepped up to the plate after your email to the boss, that doesn't exonerate them for their original actions. Customer Service and Quality Control folks need to have a good talking to from that boss.

That is not the way to uphold their reputation for quality cutting boards. I've never bought one because I don't like the weight of the larger size of board that I prefer. Nonetheless, the Boos brand is highly touted by many reputable folks, from the many cutting board reviews I looked over before buying from Teakhaus.

I still remember when you posted this when a company let you down:
‘So I ordered a 5860 FoodSaver that worked great. For 7 months. FoodSaver replaced it with another 5860 that worked great. For 9 months. FoodSaver replaced it with a 5460DTC that I liked even better (lighter and smaller footprint) which worked great. For 5 months.
So in the last 20 months I've had 3 FoodSavers that couldn't last. I'm fed up. FoodSaver is sending me a full refund for my original purchase price. Yay.’
                🙂

So for your troubles you will now have 3 boards for the price of the initial one? One on the way, presumably perfect, one with an unsightly knot, and the original, warped, one? That's not bad for a handful of carefully worded emails and minor frustration really. A month from now you'll have forgotten all about this. It took them two tries, but they're making it right with you.

And we hope the next employee meeting brings about a "DO NOT SEND IMPERFECT BOARDS OUT, EVER, REPLACEMENT OR NOT, AND WHAT IS MORE DO NOT MAKE A BOARD WITH A DEFECTIVE STRIP, EVER!" reminder.

In one sense, yeah. But in another, an expensive cutting board, even one on the very low end (~$100), is a Veblen good. I can get a cheap, functional cutting board at Target. A warped board works, but it isn’t what I ordered. A board with an unsightly knot works, but it isn’t what I ordered. In the “price, quality, service: pick two” maxim, I’m the person that chooses quality and service. If I’m paying that much, I want a quality board and good service. That’s the bargain. Accept no less.

Thorstein Veblen. I don't remember any popular reference to him in years.
                Thanks, Mosca.
