    Boos board issues.

I bought this at the beginning of July. 2 months later, it is warping and separating.

A search shows that there are quite a few people who are having issues with Boos products. I don’t know what actual % of users that would be, but it doesn’t seem to me that it’s a very complicated thing to manufacture; it’s wood, glue, and sanding. Failure rate should be vanishingly small.

I sent an email to Boos, we will see what kind of response I get. Based on what I’ve read, I’m not hopeful that they will step up.

The word "Boos" should have been a dead give away.

Their site sez 1 year warranty. I hope they honor it.

Comments on complaints I’ve read say that they really try to wiggle out of doing so. We will see. If they don’t honor it, I am fully capable of sanding and refinishing this. But I shouldn’t have to.

There are numerous reports that Boos will claim improper maintenance and use. I bought it in July. I oiled and waxed it upon receipt, then again on the first of August and September.

Yeah, unfortunately, this can happen. When it comes down to it, wood is not all the same. Just like brisket, shoulders or anything else natural, there are variations. Wood expands and contracts with settings, so this is gonna happen with some boards. I am sure they will take care of you via warranty.

For future care, try a 50/50 blend of bees wax/USP mineral oil to keep this fresh and conditioned. (I am not saying you have not taken care of your board, but this will help.)

5 months in and have not had an issue yet with my Boos block. Fingers crossed

So as a countertop, how do you use it differently than if it were a cutting board? I’m assuming you are not cutting directly in your countertop?

Richard Chrz That is correct. I placed a bamboo cutting board on top of the Boos, in which I use for cutting, chopping, etc..

          That is really, really cool.

If I had to guess it's because there are only seven boards glued together to make the whole thing. Boards that wide are going to move more than narrower stock would. Breadboard ends would have helped, but I guess they didn't have time for all that.

I thought I had ordered a Boos board for a turntable platform 5 years ago but when ordering another for a cooktop cover, realized it was not a Boos brand board. I also noticed how much the price has increased. The invoice for the board I ordered 5 years ago was for a 1 inch thick board but it is at least 1 1/2 inches thick. I'm not complaining. It has the laminated hard maple running length wise and there are 10 boards. (Depth: 16", Length: 24", Thickness: 1", Edge Detail: 1/8" Radius, Finish: Unfinished).

Edit: I may have picked up a 1 1/2 inch thick board supplied from Boos 5 years ago after all. My original order was canceled and I think I picked up the board local from Crosscuthardwoods, the Woodworkers Candy Store, which is why I don't have an email receipt.

The board I just ordered is 1 inch thick as I ordered, but the laminated boards run the shorter width direction and they are much thinner. There are 33 boards so 1 inch wide. I wonder if that was because the way I ordered the new board the depth is longer than the length. It was the opposite for the first board I ordered. (Depth: 33, Length: 24, Thickness: 1 Inch, Edge Detail: None, Finish: Unfinished).

I wonder if Hardwood Lumber company makes their own boards. Either way, they seem like quality boards.

Hard maple is a durable wood that can stand up to a lot of wear. Our butcher block is made with Hard Rock Maple. Shop now and customize your countertop!

Any response from Boos, Mosca ? I had a large Teakhaus cutting board warp slightly and they immediately replaced it and told me to keep the original cutting board. I'm betting that Boos has a similarly excellent customer service philosophy.

I hate getting emails like this too. Your product failed and now I have to prove that I am not a liar. Assume good intentions on the part of your customer no?

I’m super hard on shit! When I send an email for warranty, I preface it with that, and I don’t expect preferential; treatment, it is also the reason I chose said product. But starting with the idea that I did wrong, and no ownership of possible wrong on their side, done, period!

            #10
when you oiled it did you oil both sides? a very common mistake when doing tabletops is applying a treatment on just 1 side, allowing the other side to absorb/release moisture which warms the panel since it's asymmetric. i have made this mistake

it could be they are having problems with their wood supplier and the lumber they get has extra stress (from aggressive kiln drying) that previous builds didn't have and it took this long for the stress to present itself. you see this frequently when you try and rip a 2x lumber form the big box stores.

either way i hope they can honor the warranty

I oil the whole board, but that is a good point. My reasoning is that getting out the oil and doing the work is a messy pain in the ass, so I might as well do the whole thing: sides, bottom, grooves, etc..

They might be concerned about an Amazon bootlegged product. I had ebike batteries recalled and needed to supply pictures and proof of purchase along with receipt from a recycling facility that the recalled batteries were recycled.. Had a UV light assembly transformer go bad from a water pump in the greenhouse. Had to supply a picture of the cord cut off right at the edge of the unit. It was a sealed unit. They all just want to be sure that things are legitimate.

I thought about that when I was ordering it. It does say “John Boos” with the logo, but that could mean anything. If it’s fake, I guess I could team up with Boos and go after Amazon.

They fake everything today. I saw something on line showing "OEM" auto parts on Amazon. The packaging was 95% correct, but the parts were not oem. They were Ford, GM and Toyota bogus parts.

I will say it looks exactly like the other two Boos boards I’ve purchased. Color, size, density, all the same. I don’t doubt that it’s a Boos board. If it isn’t, then whoever is making them would do better by just making boards.

Richard Chrz I spent 35 years in warranty/service contract sales and administration. Here is my response:

              Hello, Weslie,
              On Sep 25, 2025, at 7:52 AM, Weslie Andrew <[email protected]> wrote:
Good morning, Thank you for reaching out to us. I am sorry for the inconvenience you have encountered with our board.
Can you please provide the following information?
              1.    Where did you purchase the board? I see you stated this was purchased from amazon
              2.    Please provide a proof of purchase.

Yes, purchased through Amazon. Attached is a screenshot of my receipt.

              3.    Send pictures of the defect, along with a picture of the overall board including our logo.

Because it is a warp along with a misalignment of slats, I have included a video. It shows the logo, the warp, and I used my fingernails to demonstrate the misalignment. None of my other boards, including two other Boos boards, have done this.

              4.    Please explain how you wash/sanitize your board – Steps taken? Frequency? What products are used?
              5.    Please explain how you maintain your board – Steps taken? Frequency? What products are used?
              6.    Where is this being stored?

I wash the board after every use in the sink with dish soap and a mild “scrubby”, and dry it with paper towels. I oil the boards (all of them) on the 1st and 15th of the month, or as needed (a board will just look like it’s “dry”) and use the cream on the 1st of the month. (On the 1st of the month I do the boards and sharpen my knives.) I’ve only had this board a couple months, obviously. I use Boos cream and oil, according to the instructions on their packaging. The boards stand staggered upright leaning against the backsplash. Attached is a photo of products used and my current boards, in place for use later today.

You are a much better person than I am. My response would have started with Go and ended with yourself. I would have attached a picture of the board burning in my fire pit with their logo clearly visible. Maybe that's why people tend to not like me very much. 🤣

              Okay, here is their response:

              Good morning,
I apologize for the delay in response. Warping is caused by moisture imbalances and are not covered under our warranty. With that being said I would like to offer a one-time courtesy replacement. Please let me know if you would like to proceed with replacement.

I held my tongue and asked for the courtesy replacement; the win isn’t being right, the win is getting the board replaced. That being said, this is the last Boos product I’ll ever consider, and I would never recommend them based on this interaction. It’s the only board I’ve ever had warp, in 50 years.

If I had to guess the warping is caused by poor material choices more than anything else. Using boards that wide is asking for trouble. I'm glad they are going to replace yours, but I have a feeling that you are just going to have the same problem with the next one. I can't thank you enough for sharing this experience with us. It's a great warning for anyone else considering buying anything from that company.

My plan is to take the new board and oil it, then use the board cream on it the next morning, then let it sit for a week without using it. Then I’ll repeat that process 3 or 4 more times, again without using it. At that point it should be “relaxed” enough to withstand being used for its actual intended purpose.

How annoying. I had similar experience with a Staub enameled cast iron pot. Like a small dutch oven. Used once, washed by hand first. I made soup, stirred with silicone spoon, and washed again by hand. While drying, apparently some of the paint on the inside did something I can only describe as "bubbled." The blisters opened and left flaking paint, and open cast iron, in the center of the pot. I contact Staub, similar response, told me the photos showed this to be customer misuse, and thus not covered by warranty. I nail polished over the open areas, and now it is the most expensive dog water dish I've ever had. Will never purchase Staub again. I hope you have better luck. Karen

I really wanted to let the rep have it, but she was probably told what to say. Life is hard enough in customer service without me being a jerk. I really doubt she believed what she was told to write. And meanwhile I’m relying on her to send my replacement? I’ll keep quiet and take the board. We used to call that “talking past the close.” Recognize when you’ve won, and stop.
