A quick review of Epicurean composite cutting boards

You've all seen these as they are very popular with Youtubers and professional chefs. They are not wood, nor are they plastic; they are a composite material that mimics the feel of wood. The primary advantage of them is that they are thinner (but not too thin) than most wood boards and they easily go in the dishwasher.

The primary reason you may not have one of these is that they are quite expensive. $30 for a single 12x9 board is not unusual.

However, JC Penney was having a Black Friday sale last November and I had a gift card I was trying to use up. As I was perusing their kitchen equipment I ran across some Epicurean boards for half price! I snatched up four of them.

I've been using them nearly daily since then.

I really like them. I prefer them to any plastic board I've ever used. They really do mimic wood; it's not exact, but it is very close. They also do not dull my blade as fast as my plastic boards do.

Most of them also have these felt-type feet that grip my smooth countertop better than any board I've ever used. I don't have to do the wet-paper-towel trick to keep the boards from sliding around. (The feet are on both sides of the boards, so you can flip the board over with ease and use the other side.)

Of course, I love being able to put them in the dishwasher; absolutely love that. The feet have held up perfect well thus far in the dishwasher.

Other than price, there are two disadvantages. First, they get scratched up. Here is one of mine, angled into the light to show the scratches more prominently than they really are.

The scratches don't make the board feel rough and I don't even notice them when using the board.

The other disadvantage is that they can warp. I use each board equally and one of my boards has warped slightly in the middle. Of course, it is the one that does not have any feet. I do have to use the paper towel trick on it. So, I do recommend getting the boards with the feet.

I would like to get more of these, but not at $30+ a board....so I'll been watching Black Friday sales like a hawk this fall.
