Damn thing tried to kill me

Firstly I kinda have hearing issues, but I'm also hyper sensitive to certain noises.

When we moved in the new house I swore the microwave had a slight buzz when not in use but no one believed me... well yesterday it started acting up and today it just randomly started turning on and off so of course I yoinked it out.

I considered doing a built in microwave but goodness... 3k for a smaller weaker nuker? No thanks. Then ran around trying to find a 2.2 cu ft GE countertop that is certified for an enclosed space... no one carries them withing 50 miles so we have to wait a week.

Eventually I'll want to replace the oven with a GE unit as I really dont like this one. I thought it was cooking slow so I tested it the other day and it has 100F swings and is about 50F off of max setpoint.

The fun of a new house. I have a built in microwave, didn't know they were that expensive now. Take your time and enjoy your remodel, though it can be frustrating.

hopefully not a remodel, hoping the new one slides right in. What sucks is finding a matching oven that ISN'T smart. I don't need my oven to have a camera or a microphone. I also really like those drawer microwaves, but the setup is too high for that.

Almost makes you wish for the days of cast iron ovens.

We had a double oven - 24" GE circa 1970 when we moved in. The previous owner had at least gotten it refinished in black, versus whatever it started life as. During a remodel, the wife decided she didn't need a double oven, and preferred things more open. So we have a 27" wall oven under a 30" gas cooktop. I cannot tell you HOW MANY TIMES she has said she wished she had a double oven...

I could run a double, but then there's nowhere to put the nuker

When our built-in microwave died I remember falling over at how expensive they were (and to get installed), so we have a tabletop one and use the built in for pan storage and as a kitchen timer. The arrangement works, but wow do I miss the counterspace. Tabletop 1100 watt microwaves are huge.

Depending on your built in... the setup my spot uses is a trim kit which comes with risers for a countertop unit. If your opening is 30' and you need a 30" trim kit you would just have to glue 1/2" trim around the edges so the trim kit had something to bite

ItsAllGoneToTheDogs Unfortunately, mine is integrated into a GE venthood setup.

Wish I lived near you, I'd be happy to help swap out a hood/microwave combo. They really are not that hard - 1 to 2 hours at most, less if you don't need to tweak anything or change the vent setup. I'll bet a Youtube video would walk you through it...

We have cafe built in microwave and cafe free standing dual fuel electric double oven with gas cook top. We’ve had no trouble at all with them. They are made by GE. I’ve gotten to know the local appliance repair guy. When I ask him about the cafe stuff he said he has very few problems from them.

This was one reason I really didn't want an over-the-stove microwave. Replacement time requires a lot of lifting and such. Yeah, we had a countertop microwave that started doing the same thing, which prompted SWMBO to want the over-the-stove version. Bizarre that an appliance would "turn itself on", even though it was only for a second.

While researching which one we wanted for the replacement, that little countertop device was left unplugged when not being used!

We replaced a 24" oven/microwave combo with a 30" double oven. I cut the opening with a jigsaw and removed a drawer. Also cut and stained a piece of wood at the top to match the frame and cover and opening. Can't remember if I had to have an electrician do any wiring. Microwave sits on a counter now. We love it - especially the wider oven.

Ours is 30" I haven't been a fan of the oven but its just a bad design, I have higher hopes for a replacement if I can find a dumb one

That is a GE oven that is giviing you grief? We have a Jenn Air built in that is now 29 years old. If I have to replace it someday I will want to know what to avoid. Didn't like the idea at first but kind of nice to have an oven at eye level for keeping watch on your cooking.

The microwave and oven WERE Kenmore, the nuker tried to shock me and is getting replaced with a GE unit. Long term I'd like to replace the oven with a matching GE unit but almost all of the good ones have a touch screen and microphones and cameras and I'm not a fan of that.

Kitchenaid fan here. If my appliances had cameras and mics, id have yo wear my aluminum foil hat and underbritches in the house and no just when I go out.

We have a narrow wall mount electric oven, I think 24 inches. Replaced it a couple of years ago with a Bosch convection oven. Do not use it much, but are pleased with its simple features. I am confused/uneducated re air fryers versus convection ovens. Can one use a convection oven as an air fryer?

An air fryer is just a convection oven with a fancy new name for the most part

Same here. I was going to actually buy an air fryer, but decided to try my convection oven first, and I was not disappointed! Saved me valuable counter space.

Microwaves are the work of the devil, ask my family. I allow one out under the awning but not in the house

Team kitchen aid here as well. KA Architect II series 30” gas range and whatever dishwasher. Both are over 15 years old. This oven is a BEAST!!! I put this thing through its paces and it has never let me down. The DW, however, is starting to be a little brat. Microwave is tabletop Panasonic from Costco. It is also a great machine. It is on a cart with “the precious” aka the breville toaster oven. When it comes time to upgrade, I will look at KA again for sure.

Last year our microwave had been making noise. Fortunately I was walking by it (and it wasn't enclosed) when flames started shooting out of it. I was able to unplug it and carry it out of the house before anything else started burning.

At our OTHER house, which we bought 7 years ago the fridge and dishwasher have been replaced, I've had to replace parts on the cooktop, but the oven and microwave are still there. The digital screen on the microwave doesn't work anymore, so that's fun. The whole oven/microwave is a single unit, in a homemade "built-in" unit. Our own stove that we have had for years is a double oven range. My wife will not accept anything but another one of those, which I'm OK with. Right now I'm kind of waiting for Google to fire my son-in-law (every day he wakes up wondering if today is his turn) so he can do what he's planning to do when that happens, and I can hire him to renovate the kitchen. To be honest, I'm scared of what I'm going to find when I rip the thing apart.
