The EPA accepted 3M Leadcheck swabs, which were a standard, was sold this year to another company. The 3M brand was sold everywhere like Home Depot and Lowes. Don’t know where they are sold now but this might help. I know about these because our local building inspectors used them and one gave me some to check for lead in the old house we use to live in.
I test the cast iron pieces I find at yard sales and such with a lead paint test kit I get at Ace hardware. They work on cast iron beautifully. The cast iron collectors I associate with have an unwritten rule. If we get a positive lead test we drill a hole in the piece so that it can’t be used to cook with.
yakima the cast iron can get contaminated with lead if it is used to melt the lead. So many of us good old boys have grabbed a cast iron pot or skillet to melt bullet or sinker lead in . Then we leave it in the garage for next time. Sometimes they end up for sale in yard sales, antique malls, and junk shops. I’m told there’s no way to get all the lead off the pot so I test for it on anything I buy. It’s all about how they were used not what brand they are.
That brings back kid memories of melting lead for sinkers in the cast iron pans. Nobody even thought twice about it. That goes along with playing with Mercury. My last test didn't detect any levels of metal contamination in my system. Drinking from the garden hose must of countered any of those levels.
