I really have to invest in a good CI or carbon steel pan

      Beautiful job, Brother!
Please, tell me more, as to th hows...

I so wanna do this (sandin) to some/most/alla my Lodges; they'd jus be happier to cook in.

Personally, I'd rather they still sold unseasoned pans, an lemme take it from there...early "pre-seasoned" Lodges were a sticky, tacky disaster, in my experience, an were immediately stripped bare!

They've gotten better, but I kinda hate payin fer a process that I gotta put a lot of sweat n elbow grease into removin...seems kinda counter-productive, an economically wasteful, from my personal viewpoint.

I jus seasoned up some new Lodges, few days back (posted in CI)...
Against my better judgement, I did so, over their factory seasonin, as an experiment.
We'll see how that goes, an I'll be certain to post my findins.

Used my 4” grinder with a 80 grit layered grinding pad tell most moderate pitting was gone then 100 grit orbital sander and then 180 about 45 minutes of work plenty good for me going to give it a good 5 costs of seasoning all my other skillets Griss walls And SK total non stick this lodge is going to be a great one🤓

Many years ago -- in an attempt to clean out my kitchen that I did not fully think through -- I mistakenly put my few cast iron pans in the garage. For over a year. Through a hurricane. (Oops.)

I nearly threw them out, but after some serious googling/youtube watching, to my astonishment, I was able to restore them. It took some serious steel-wool scrubbing and a few trips through the oven's self-clean cycle, but I got that rust off. In fact, my most used piece of cookware is my 12" lodge. I can easily cook a fried egg in that thing and it doesn't stick at all!

Oh, I concur, wholeheartedly...my more recent Lodges in use don't stick; they're way too well seasoned fer that... th rough finish jus bugs me, as I mebbe have/regularly use me a few vintage pieces, as well...

Any downside to sanding cast iron until very smooth? Spinaker

Yup, I have both a Fields, an a Stargazer, both very much smoother than modern Lodges.

On mine there were some pits pretty deep so I had to sand a lot to get down to those. I think you want a step rougher than glass-smooth or it will be harder to season. Mine is a little too smooth. I’ve actually considered roughing it up a bit.
My 15yr old 12” lodge is smoothed from use which I think is actually a better surface.

Nope! I have several that I have done. I don't go over 120 grit paper. Otherwise the seasoning simply flakes off.

Sanding a new lodge nets you the same performance as modern fancy ones at less than 1/5 the cost.

Took many many coarse sanding pads and an hour or so to do mine. And be prepared for the dust etc.

Also a lot of the fancy modern stuff is thinner and lighter, sanding your own means you can make one with proper thermal inertia without spending for something like a finex (which are nice and heavy).
