This is a complicated question and you need a CI Whisperer to answer it.

        Do you camp?
What do you already have as cookers?
What type of range is in your kitchen?
What other CI is in your inventory?
Do you like vintage too - can you restore and re-season?
Do you have a fire pit (if so get a tripod).
Do you know how to make a Montana campfire (the internet is strangely quiet on this so I will have to post it soon)?
How much extra weight can your floor withstand?

this is my first true CI. I have a Le Cruset dutch oven, plus various other scanpans , all clad etc. I have an induction cooktop, double oven. outdoors we have a Napoleon gasser, weber performer deluxe and Large BGE. I do not camp.

I have the same type shelves in my storage unit. I bought three sets and used the third to extend the height of the other two. I had to rig up some bunji cords to tie them to the wall to make sure they didn't fall over.

Large Dutch oven is as versatile as the 12” pan but still different.
Lodge is the economical choice here. You could get fancy enamel, but in/around fire go for straight CI.

If if you get a "camp" version with legs you can cook with coals directly under and on top of it, which is fun.

Good for outdoor frying sessions too.

I’d start at no smaller an a 6qt or a deep lodge #12. The nice thing is they aren’t crazy expensive.

Just so happens there's a sale on Finex. I've had my eye on that dutch oven for awhile but my cast iron is currently under garage arrest as my wife won't let me use it on her new glass top in the kitchen.

The garage arrest problem is no problem. It just gives you another excuse to cook outdoors more and maybe buy more equipment to cook on.

Oh no worries gcdmd I'm out there using the flat top quite a bit and the cast iron always gets used for side dishes when the smoker is fired up. It will eventually find it's way back in the house. My Finex 10 is already back in the house under the agreement it only goes in the oven. So it's in a probation period for the time being! :-)

I tell my wife that it's a kitchen, not a museum, with varying results.

so just to refresh this a little. I am thinking maybe the Field no 8. anyone? I love the smithy no 12 we have but its a bit large for most of the baking recipes I have seen (call for a no 10) .

You will love the No. 8. I have a few. One for the kitchen, one for the camp box and one over at my old man's house. They are fantastic skillets.

I have no experience with the Field but Smithy has free shipping on everything right now do they offer a 8? Also I think Finex is running a promotion of some kind right now and I'm pretty sure they offer a 8.

Finex's No. 8 is a great little pan. Love mine. You can't go wrong with anything from Finex. I can't wait until they come out with a large 'love handle" griddle pan. Just like their grill pans but smooth. Those will be sweet!

The Field skillets are awesome. Aaaaand they just came out with the 12" pan.

I love that little No. 8 Smithey. It is a great little chefs skillet. Killer for eggs!

Aldi's has a sale this week on their mini CI pieces. I like using them to serve, straight to the table, using small cutting boards as trivets. CI keeps the food hot.

Just thought I would share this with you. This is one of my favorite pics I took this summer. The No. 12 putting in some seasoning work with the KBQ. I love using grass-fed tallow when using live fire like this. It smells amazing! It was a beautiful thing. Man it was hot that day too, damn hot. All that smoke and fire just made it all the better. I did end up in the lake after cooking, which felt great.

You guys in the southern part of the state get all that nice tropical weather. We suffer up here with 75 degree weather all summer. Which is about 2 weeks long!!
