I posted a little bit about this when I was looking for a deep fryer and griddle lid: https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...ish-fryer-3060
Pictures of the restoration of the deep fryer #3060 are in that thread, here is a "before" picture of it. It had build up so I stripped it and reseasoned it:

I found this 2nd generation Sportsman Grill on Facebook marketplace 100 miles away and my BIL, who lives there, got it for me. He dropped it off at my house on 12/26 as he and some friends were heading to the casinos in Lake Charles.

It was not too bad, mostly light to moderate surface rust and some carbon build up. I used oven cleaner for the carbon and a vinegar bath to take care of the rust. I had to grind the two stove bolts that held the base to the body and I replaced them with stainless bolts. Some areas I had to hit with some 80 grit sand paper but by and large I don't think this grill was used very much.
The worst part of this unit was the bail (handle) - it had a lot of rust and pitting like it had sat in water. I sanded it to get the rough sharp parts off but it has some deep pitting.
As noted in the thread linked above I was able to find the deep fryer and the #3093 griddle lid for this so I have a complete 2nd generation set up.
Parts in the vinegar bath - much easier and quicker than electrolysis when dealing with light rust.

I seasoned with four coats of spray canola oil in the oven: 450o for an hour then 500o for 1/2 an hour. Here is the finished product. Not a perfect restoration as I intend to use this and not put it on a shelf to stare at. Lodge produced these after BSR went out of business. I have the recently redesigned Lodge Sportsman grill and it is a good grill but not as cool as the original BSR and Lodge design.

Cool ad I found on Facebook showing the many different configurations for use:
