If you’re already thinking of going with the larger one that might be the way to go. If you will occasionally appreciate the bigger size for larger cooks, then that’s the way to go IMO. Rarely do people say, “man, I wish I’d gotten a smaller one”. But something to keep in mind also, it will be heavier and take up more space. I’ve got a Lodge 6 qt and love it, but I’m only cooking for one.
EDIT: I forgot something, being this is The Pit…..get both!
8 quart seems to be the average size most people buy and I think it is probably the most versatile size - it can cook one pot meals for small to medium groups or a smaller volume for one or two people. I have sizes ranging from 6 to 16 quarts and the 8 and 10 quart sizes get used the most.

If not cooking outdoors, I am cooking on the stovetop with my 14" carbon steel wok, 12" CI skillet, or in the oven with my two Lodge CI pizza pans, or two dutch ovens. I've also got a nifty Lodge carbon steel grill pan that rocks for veggies outdoors.
I am late to the advice party! I wanted a 7 quart Lodge CI dutch oven, but my wife got me the 5qt years ago for Christmas, and for most purposes, that size has been great - especially baking. However, for big stews and such, I use the 7 quart Misen dutch oven I got on a kick starter a couple of years ago.

I’m actually gonna vouch for the 6er. I’d rather have a pot that’s half full or full for 90% of my cooks, than a bigger one that I only fill once per year. My highly subjective personal preference:-)
Or you can go this route - i have (3) 6 quart Dutch ovens. I had an old enameled lodge that chipped, and they replaced that one for free. I was so surprised (it was a very old pot) that i bought a beautiful new blue one. I also have a cast iron one that i use directly on coals. I highly suggest doing this - 8 quarts? What? I have 18 quarts available. Come on man!!!!
