Do you use a rib rack? Any pros or cons you can think of, besides the pro of the additional racks you can fit? On a kettle / SNS setup for pork ribs, I'm thinking the max you could fit on the main grate is maybe 2 racks laying down, so I'm considering buying one just to get some extra volume in there.
Rib racks SUCK. I've said it before, I'll say it again.
Most of them are too small, too short, not wide enough, etc. And they wanna change anywhere from $11 to like $35 for one. Useless pieces of junk, most of them.
Buy two sets of those for $16 plus shipping. Now you can do 6 racks of ribs of whatever length you want, and they are tall enough to hold them upright instead of falling all over the place like most of the rib racks I have seen.
You're welcome.
Here is how they look:
This is 4 of those organizers ($32 today's pricing) holding 12 racks of ribs.
I'm still chomping at the bit for my chance to use these, though....
Pit Barrel Cooker
Weber Master-Touch
Blackstone Omnivore 4 Burner Griddle
Thermoworks: Signals, Billows, Thermopens, Thermopops, Nodes, bunch of silicone stuff, and more!
OnlyFire Rotisserie w/ Basket attachment for the Weber
Vortex for the Weber
Both of Meathead's books!
Way too many BBQ related accessories, tools, and doo-dads!
I had a few for the Weber waaay back. They're still in the shed somewhere. It did help me get maybe 3 racks onto the 22" kettle for an offset cook, and two for my little portable barrel cooker, but they're a moot point now since I have the pit barrel. I like realdocBBQ's solution!
When smoking on my Kettle, either the 22 or the 26 , I like to use a rib rack because it gets the ribs further away from the coal bed. The problem with a Kettle is radiant heat from the coal bed, a rib rack is one step to alleviating that. I think the ribs cook with more convection.
On Webers new Smart Ring for the Kettle, it raises the cooking grate 4" . That helps with radiant heat, a bunch.
Some have done the same by using the Roti accessory and putting 4 bolts around the top edge to hold a grate.
