Nice. I use a hook like that to flip my chunks around in the brine.

Submerge it in white vinegar for a day or two, rinse it off, you may not need to much sanding or wire brushing at all.

            Good idea on vinegar. Thanks.

Smoked Transistors, your vinegar idea worked slick. Thanks!

Did you really do a good job here if you paid full price? I am sure the estate sale marked it up 1000%.

You probably got taken. I would have settled for nothing less than a 50% discount.

          (I kid, that looks awesome)

My buddy's estate sale line is "I would be a buyer at $1.00". (Or whatever price he offers.)

My fall back cleaning plan is to ship it to the hygiene nazi, fzxdoc. She probably has left over emery cloth from her latest grill grate plasticectomy.

I scored this flipper at a steam-powered sawmill demonstration several years ago. There was a blacksmith repairing sawmill equipment, and had a few things on display, mostly made from spikes. There were a couple flippers for sale, so I asked him if he could make one left-handed. He said he'd give it a try, to give him an hour. I returned before we left, and he had made this. Click image for larger version

Since I had essentially commisioned it, I paid that. You got a good deal.
I recondition it every year with a green scrubby then heat it in the weber and wipe it down with a puck. lasts all year.

What has bugged me since day 1, is the bulldog is on the wrong side. shouldn't the tip rest up? Maybe there's a safety consideration (using the bottle opener regularly)?

Oh my. Tip up or down. Left or right.
My secret Santa last year gifted me 2 modern flippers. long and short. Handles are ambidextrous, Tips are up, point right, as does my much more classy $1 bargain. (Sorry buddy.)

If left handed, I can see the desirability of reversing the point. If bulldog grip is comfortable, live with it. I think your blacksmith got it right.

Can always spend $100 to change it!

                Whew! Technical stuff.

John Browning could feel, hear, and visualize the internal workings of the prototype lever actions he had his brother machine/carve. Here we are, well over 100 years later, muddling through. At least we can see what the heck we are debating.
