    MHP SearMagic vs Grill Grates

The SearMagic grates on my MHP hybrid have become pretty warped over the years. Anyone have any thoughts on if I should replace the SearMagic or go with new Grill Grates? They look pretty similar to me...

    TIA

Sorry but I'm new here, what's a MHP? I looked on the "commonly used acronyms" page but it wasn't there.

    Here to learn you know

    Thanks!

I just checked the list, DTA isn't taken yet. We could start a new one "Death to Acronyms" .

Modern Home Products. The Sear Magic is a grate system on a gas cooker.

I have used Grill Grates only a few times. Looking at them, I agree that they are similar. I don't know what the metal used in the Sear Magic, but the Grill Grates are aluminum. From a metallurgical standpoint, the only metal with better heat conduction than Aluminum is Silver.

So when can we expect the Silver GrillGrates??

Just ordered some Grill Grates to replace my original rusted out "stainless grates" on a 3 year old gas Char-Broil infrared. I think I'm going to like them.

I have the grill grates and think they are great. They heat really well and do a much better job of reducing flare ups than anything I have tried in the past.

They are aluminum. This was in the MHP review on the site... Max said they are "similar, but not quite the same"

"Sear Magic consists of two sided, reversible aluminum cooking grates. One side is ribbed for grill marks and the other is smooth. As the name indicates, they intensify heat from standard gas burners and work in tandem with IR burners to sear while reducing moisture loss. They are similar to the popular GrillGrates, but not quite the same, and of course MHP came first."

Unless they are covered by warranty for warping, I probably get the grill grates as everyone really seems to love them.

MHP makes Sear Magic Grates for their own equipment. GrillGrates makes grates for all equipment and will do custom cutting.

They are both made from anodized aluminum. The only difference is that the GrillGrates have oval holes and the SearMagic grates have rectangular slots. Both will warp in a hot grill which the MHP is. Anodized aluminum can warp in temps greater than 750 which my grill can get to and my grillGrates have warped. Brad from GrillGrates informed me of that. My understanding from MHP's website is that their SearMagic grates are lifetime covered so you may want to go with those. If you didn't get many flare ups with them you probably won't notice much difference.

One thing no one has mentioned yet is the "Grate Tool" spatula that come with GrillGrates. It makes lifting and turning food a snap with GrillGraates...

Thanks for the thoughtful response. Seems the warranty only covers from "rust-through" not warping. However, MHP support said all I need to do is heat them up, put them on and flat surface wrapped in a towel and stand on them to bend them back.

I'll let the pit know how it goes.

Finally got around to trying to straighten out the warped grates. Sure enough, heating them up and standing on them did the trick, good as new. It's pretty cool, you can actually feel them bend right back when you stand on them. I heated the grate over the infrared burner (it's a hybrid) for about 10 minutes, put on concrete, covered with a folded towel and stepped on with some old sneakers. It bent right back.
