Replace the OEM Weber Kettle grate with Stainless Steel

MY Weber MT Kettle original cooking grate, especially the removable center part, needs to be replaced. I have the SnS Easy Spin but I don't use it when the Vortex is used. I have seen several cheap so-called stainless steel grates and just two 304 labeled stainless steel grates with the removable center for sale on Amazon. Has anyone bought one of these from Amazon? I always thought I would get the Killa Grilla grate but I think they are out of business. I don't want to use my Vortex with the SnS Easy Spin but I guess I could.Opinions? Thanks in advance.

I use my SnS easy spin grate over a super hot bed of coals to sear and it’s not damaged it in any way other than a bit of buildup and that will clean off so I would say you’ll be ok. It’s solid SS so can’t really ruin it.

If you want a cheap grate that can be “ruined” with the Vortex, I’d just get whatever Weber knockoff you can find. If you want a SS one, SNS pretty much has the market to itself at this point.

I’ve had my SNS Kettle for almost 3 years, only using the EZ Spin grate it comes with. In all that time, I frequently use my vortex with it and have no problems with the grate deteriorating or anything like that. If I had to guess I’d say I’ve used the Vortex at least 40-50 times with the EZ Spin grate. In fact I used it again last night. Here’s a few closeup pics of the grate, showing the grate above the vortex and just outside its usual resting place. The only difference you can see is the color. All the grease on the grate directly above the Vortex is burned off, giving it a whitish color. Outside the edge of the Vortex you’ll notice it’s darker in color. I can see no difference in the width of the tines. Anyway, I say go ahead and use your current SNS grate, no reason to buy a new one.

I’m in the SNS easy spin club. Really like that grate, and mine has been engulfed in a lot of live wood fires, and no signs of any damage to it. I’ve had it for likely 3 full years so far.

How thick are the bars on that one? I've been bouncing back and forth between the 24" sns grate or the bge version for the WSCG but I think the sns is going to win.

So, I’m not sure how they compare to the 24 grate, but they appear to be similar. They are super thin in comparison to the Weber grate with removable insert, making the grate really light, but very well built, at least the 22. And now that fzxdoc told me about the SNS easy spin for the kamado, I’m pretty set on that now.

I just got an email that SnS has 15% off the ez spin grates right now

I use the Easy Spin. I pretty much don’t think about it, ever; I just cook on it and move on.

Buy the Weber GBS stainless steel grate… works well for me.

I have used the easy spin for lots of high heat with coals. It has not deteriorated. Both the easy spin and vortex are stainless. I figure if the Vortex can take the heat, so should the grate.

I'm in the EZ spin/Vortex camp with zero issues on my Performer. Sucks to hear about KillaGrilla. I got their grates for my E6 and 26" kettle. Would have gotten one for my Performer if I had known about them at the time. Them some beefy and high quality grates!

Thanks everyone. I will use my SnS Easy Spin grate with my Vortex and retire the old Weber grate. Wow, with these answers, I'm not spending any money. That's a first for The Pit!

Purc I see your decision is made, but I'll jump in anyway and say I use the Easyspin with the Vortex often on my Performer, and have no issues with the grate burning up or anything. I imagine there is some conducted heat through the bars of the grate that you would not have using the one with the removable center, but I've never noticed my chicken to have scorch marks from the grates when going indirect using the Vortex for high indirect heat.

Unless you have accessories for the Weber grate, I see no truly good reason to have one with the removable center.

See - we talked you OUT of spending money!
