In this 2-part interview by Jeff Tracy we meet Emily Detwiler. Detwiler has just taken over the management of KCBS in a turnaround situation. Carolyn Wells, a co-founder, remains as Executive Director. The 35 year-old not-for-profit which sanctions perhaps 500 barbecue competitions posted a loss of $329,000 in 2018 and its membership is declining. They are officially down to 19,000 but I am told that number is inflated by a number of expirations.
Detwiler comes to KCBS from Smithfield Foods, the giant pork producer, where she was Marketing Director. Her experience has been developed across Brands and Retailers such as Smithfield, Hostess, Borden, Walmart, Sam's Club, Ahold Delhaize, Meijer, Hy-Vee, etc. She has developed partnerships with leading brands such as Weber, Kingsford, E.J. Gallo, and Tabasco.
She holds Bachelor's degrees in Marketing and Management from Drake University, as well as a Master in Business Administration from the University of Missouri; where she has served on the MBA Advisory Board for +10 years.
