This was a great find and I am disappointed that I haven’t been here before. It’s the No. 2 of 2 restaurants in Banner Elk according to TripAdvisor. No. 1 is the very high-end, prix-fixe restaurant, The Artisanal. Since Mari Jo had eaten there previously for an anniversary dinner, I suggested Stonewall’s this time while staying in a mountain cabin in Seven Devils, NC. (Historical note:There used to be eight devils but one went to the OBX and after running up Jockey’s Ridge, the highest sand dune on the east coast, was never heard from again. The name for the area where it met it’s demise is now called Kill Devil Hills.)
Mari Jo and I had crab stuffed mushrooms, lobster bisque, creamy chicken soup Florentine and a NY strip with crispy Brussels sprouts. We shared everything and both agree it was gastronomic Nirvana. I would rate the steaks here just slightly slow the quality of higher end steakhouses, like Bern’s and The Angus Barn. What I found really refreshing though was that the strip was not seasoned at all so the full flavor of that piece of meat was front and center. I added just a small amount of salt before devouring my portion. The service was exceptional as was the bar. Their wine list is very nice by any standards, not a huge selection but a huge variety with price points all over the place. I highly recommend Stonewall’s if you’re in the High Country of NC (Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, etc.), where many Floridians are this time of year to escape the heat, humidity and daily afternoon thunderstorms. Jim White and hoovarmin , can I get an amen?
As a footnote, I spent the most ever on a bottle of wine here. I was pleasantly surprised at the minimal markup from retail. It was a 2016 Tenuta San Guido Sassicaia, an incredible Bolgheri Super Tuscan. I took out a second mortgage to pay the tab.
