I mentioned in the Cinco de Mayo thread that I’m in Atlanta and had a reservation for soul food and the instant response was a request for photos and a review.
I should start by mentioning that I had visited a very good soul food restaurant in the vicinity several years ago when we came to see the Gators play in the Peach Bowl. When I made the reservation tonight I thought I was returning to the same place, but as soon as I entered I realized this was a different establishment.
I have since worked out that the previous visit was to Pittypat’s Porch, which now seems to be closed.
Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint is set up as a venue for live music, and a very good band was playing when I arrived. Because I was alone, I was seated at the bar, but was surrounded by a very friendly and engaging group of people.
The food was outstanding. I made a meal of two appetizers: a seafood gumbo and a variety plate with fried green tomatoes, fried onion strings and fried okra. That left a tiny bit of room for the peach cobbler dessert. I blame the guy next to me who got some and raved about it (the guy on the other side raved about the gumbo).
I was less crazy about the cobbler. The gumbo and fried things were incredible.
I’m traveling without my laptop, so apologies in advance if the photos don’t load correctly.
