Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint: Soul food in Downtown Atlanta

I mentioned in the Cinco de Mayo thread that I’m in Atlanta and had a reservation for soul food and the instant response was a request for photos and a review.

I should start by mentioning that I had visited a very good soul food restaurant in the vicinity several years ago when we came to see the Gators play in the Peach Bowl. When I made the reservation tonight I thought I was returning to the same place, but as soon as I entered I realized this was a different establishment.

I have since worked out that the previous visit was to Pittypat’s Porch, which now seems to be closed.

Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint is set up as a venue for live music, and a very good band was playing when I arrived. Because I was alone, I was seated at the bar, but was surrounded by a very friendly and engaging group of people.

The food was outstanding. I made a meal of two appetizers: a seafood gumbo and a variety plate with fried green tomatoes, fried onion strings and fried okra. That left a tiny bit of room for the peach cobbler dessert. I blame the guy next to me who got some and raved about it (the guy on the other side raved about the gumbo).

I was less crazy about the cobbler. The gumbo and fried things were incredible.

I’m traveling without my laptop, so apologies in advance if the photos don’t load correctly.

Good write up Jimbo, the food does look darn good! I’ve never had fried green tomatoes before, I’ve got to try that someday.

We need to talk more about what we can and can’t eat.

The fried green tomatoes reminded me of how I just need to slice my eggplant, instead of trying to slice into fingers.

Love me some good gumbo, no matter the weather.

Oh, it will happen, Panhead John. Last few details are getting done, but now I’m on a long trip. I’m in Atlanta because I’m an idiot and let my passport expire. I’m scheduled to pick up the new one this afternoon and head out tomorrow afternoon.
