Wireless Fridge and Freezer Thermometer With Phone App….This One is Totally Wireless!

I’ve been looking around for a “truly” wireless thermometer and alarm system for my indoor and outdoor fridge/freezers. Most of what I saw have sensors you place in the fridge and have a wired probe that runs outside of the fridge/freezer door and connect to a hub mounted on the side of the fridge. I didn’t want to run a probe wire outside the freezer and under the door gasket. I also didn’t want to clutter the side of my fridges with a hub and a cable hanging down. I think I’m gonna order this one from a company out of California called YoLink. It got overall excellent reviews on Amazon.

The sensors have their own WiFi network that connect to their hub and claim a range of 1/4 mile. You can place one of their sensors in your freezer/fridge with no cable and it connects to their hub which you connect to your WiFi and can then place anywhere in your house. It comes with double sided tape you can use to stick the sensor inside of your fridge/freezer. You can monitor your temps from anywhere once you download their app, and of course, you can also use the sensors inside to monitor temps. As with most of them, it also has temperature limits you can set to be notified in case of an outage, or whatever. They claim a 2 year battery life for their sensors. Anyway, any of you have something like this? If so do you like it….anything I should be concerned about?

I have the Thermoworks Node. It works really well but does have wires going into the Frig and Freezer. The biggest thing for me was to set the alarms high enough. I didn't realize the temp swings a freezer would have (like an oven has). Finally I realized the temp swings are necessary so the compressor knows when to run.

Good point Skip! I noticed a few of the reviewers said something similar. Do you remember what your set temps are for high and low alarms? For freezer and fridge? I have no clue what my high temp alarms should be set at.

We have our Freezer and an extra Refrigerator beside each other so I'm monitoring the two freezers. I've set the High to 39* and the Lows to -20*. The temp swings drove me crazy until I realized that they were necessary to make the freezers work properly.

I believe the Node does have just the unit with an ambient temperature sensor. Pretty sure you can just stick it in the freezer. I bought the one with the additional temp probe (and the first unit I bought has two) just because I wanted to keep an eye on the surrounding temp where ever I have the fridge/freezer combo and chest freezer. The fridge freezer combo unit is actually an indoor refrigerator, so I had to install a 60 watt appliance bulb, and disable the light switch so it would help it keep running in colder than inside the house temperatures.

Right now they're both in the garage, so both nodes report the same temp on their external (ambient), but if I ever move one to the basement, I'll at least know what temps they're dealing with.

My temps are set for the fridge at 55 for the high, 25 for the low. The freezer is 32 high, and -20 for the low. The chest freezer is set the same 32 for the high, and -20 for the low.

Edit: had to play with those a bit. Used to get too many notifications especially when seasons changed.

Edit+Edit: I sound like a salesman. Thanks not intentional! If you get it, let us know how you like it! I did just look up YoLink, and apparently it connects with LoRa enabled devices. So you'll have a much wider range of devices you can pair with it, than just the temperature monitoring.

Yes, Thermoworks node has a version with no wires. I have it in my indoor freezer. My outdoor freezer has the one with a probe so that I can monitor the freezer temp and the ambient air temp in the garage.

I have the same Node and it’s good when it’s connected. Do you have any issues with WiFi connectivity? Even with my Eero system, I have trouble keeping it connected.

barelfly The only issue I had was with the base model with no probes. You have to place the unit inside the freezer and the WiFi signal would not penetrate the cabinet of the antique freezer in the garage - plus maybe it was a little too far away? I bought the model with one probe - probe into freezer and the unit on the outside and the signal is fine. The base model is now inside a modern freezer in my kitchen, 10 feet from my WiFi, and it is fine.

I’ve had mine for 3 weeks now and have had zero connectivity issues. In fact, a few days ago Centerpoint Energy shut off our power for a few hours for planned upgrades in the neighborhood. When the power came back on, all 5 of my sensors were up and running normally shortly afterwards.

Panhead John Find and read the specs thoroughly. I think I saw in the write up on Amazon that the one you posted is good for 14oF and up. Freezers should be at 0oF or cooler.

Yeah, I saw that. Amazon frequently screws up specs on products they sell. This is from YoLink’s website.

Great. That was a problem I kept finding when looking for a freezer thermometer: most were fridge thermometers and would not work below about 15 degrees. I settled on the more expensive Node due to great reviews and great company reputation.

Well, I wound up ordering the YoLink Temperature Sensors and after using them for about 5 days now, I really like em! You can order the hub with different numbers of sensors or just sensors by themselves. I wound up getting 1 sensor and hub and another order of 3 sensors by themselves. While the instructions could have been be a little more clear, I can say that they do have good customer service! I got stuck trying to connect the hub with my WiFi network and had to call them for help. Not only did they answer the phone pretty fast and without having to go thru 37 prompts, the lady who answered spoke pretty good English! She was very nice and patient with me and in just a few minutes I was up and running.

It said in the online description that they came with tape to mount them on the fridge walls, none was included in my order. No big deal though, I just bought a few Velcro sticky strips and will mount them soon, but honestly it’s no big deal cause there’s plenty of room to just sit em on a shelf. It took me a few days to set my alarm limits correctly without getting constant alerts on my phone and iPad. No fault of the product itself though, it was working as it should!

The hub itself has its own WiFi network which connects to your sensors. It claims to have a 1/4 mile range and easily works through the metal walls of your fridge/freezer. While I can’t verify that, I believe em! My hub is upstairs in my bedroom and I’m having no connectivity problems at all. Snapshot of my temps showing on my phone. They will register temps from -22* to 158* F.

Here’s where you set your alarm temp levels. It registers humidity levels also but I don’t really care about that too much.

You can give a name to each sensor and show its location.

The small hub is wireless or you can hook it directly to your computer and comes with an Ethernet cable.

The sensors themselves are fairly small too, measuring 2 1/2” by 2 1/2”. These are great to have IMO, especially if you regularly stock gourmet food items like I do!

Even though my pic doesn’t show it, the temps are easy to read when opening the door. You can, of course, use these to monitor temps anywhere, such as a barn, workshop or greenhouse……not just fridge temps. I can say that these work very well and if you’re in the market for something like this, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them!

This is a far better price than FireBoard. Thank you for sharing.

Richard, I only paid $106. for the hub and 4 sensors. They also have a nice build to them, they don’t feel cheap at all. I had a regular ol fridge thermometer I was using before, nothing like this, and the new sensor in my fridge registered the same temp as what was showing on my other thermometer. So….I’m guessing they’re accurate as well.

I think you’d really like em, easy to setup and to use. If it was pretty easy for me, it should be a breeze for anyone else. 🤓

Panhead John - two weeks later how are they working out? Our refrigerator/freezer setting displays seem to be off from actual temperature. I have a basic dial type thermometer in the fridge and it’s reading below 30 degrees even though the temperature displays 36. I’ve noticed lately that things are freezing in the fridge.
Looking at better thermometers for fridge and freezer for both my wife’s and my peace of mind.

Really like em Jay! They have performed flawlessly. I’ve got 5 of the sensors now. Bought an additional one for a small stand alone freezer I’ve got in the garage. I like being able to add additional sensors and I can see them all on the same page thru their app. Recommended!

Keep us posted. I wonder about the longevity of this product. It's almost too good to be true.

I have the Thermoworks thermometers on 3 units. They work fine, but I'd really like a wifi feature.

Kathryn, it looks like the sensors have a 2 year warranty and the WiFi base has a 1 year warranty. I read a lot of reviews on these before buying em and they were overwhelmingly positive. IMO, for $106. for the WiFi base and 4 sensors they can’t be beat!

        #11
Thanks for the update now that you've used them. The fact that there is no wire running out the fridge and freezer doors is extremely appealing. I've avoided buying others for my fridges and freezers because of the wire. Three sensors and a hub are now in my Amazon cart. I'll add two more sensors later if I find I need/want them for another fridge. So, Panhead John I can hold you responsible for making me buy these, right?

Enabler! I have an older one that I used to monitor the fridge temp in the RV. I use that fridge to cure stuff. It finally failed…
