    Combustion Predictive Thermometer “Lockup”

I bought the double barrel set during the pre release sale. I purchased them in April 2022 and received them finally in late December of 2022. My experience with them indoors has been a breeze and it is nice to know approximately how many minutes are left on the chicken in the over or what’s happening with the steak you are cooking. Once I took them outside to use in my grill I was pretty disappointed with the range as I had to leave the display on the side table 1 foot from my grill to get any reading on the display. They released a booster which addressed this and I ordered two as they offered them at half off to early adopters. This has been super effective and I have been really pleased with how they perform outside with the addition of the booster. I also really like how it keeps them charged. So I was prettty happy with this purchase even though it was exorbant, I felt they were delivering on their promise and the build quality is very nice. If I only insert to the double line the ambient temp probe does a good job of measuring the pit temp and so you practically have two thermometers in one device. I was so happy that I ordered one with a display for a dear friend of mine who likes to cook. She loved it!

Fast forward to December of 2023, I take a trip to San Juan island to meet said friend and I bring my probes because I have a ribeye roast and we are going to cook steaks for Christmas. I use her probe too as my display can connect to up to four of these and we made several steaks. Everything goes great, the steak is perfect, my reputation intact and it’s a Merry Christmas. So I go home and I realize that I have swapped a probe with my friend because I was doing the firmware updates and she was not and when I get home one of mine is running an old version. So I update it and it never works again. Hmmmmmmmm 🧐 the same day she texts me and the same with hers, wont connect to the display. 🫢

I send a message to support describing the issue and they mention that there is a “lockup” issue and that they have a new firmware update coming out that should fix it. So I go to Reddit and download the beta app and it does fix one of my thermometers. But it doesn’t fix the other one - I can’t tell the difference between the units so I can’t tell which batch the bad probe is from. Well now that I have found the Reddit for these I learn a few things. The very first original batch has a battery issue where the battery basically drains faster than it should. They call it “annoying but not a problem” I had noticed when I got my first probes that they wouldn’t hold a charge in the drawer for 30 days in their holder as advertised. I also learn that newer ones are rated for full submersion.

I have reached out to support and they have asked me to let them all drain for 48 hours outside the chargers so that the microchip can reset and then try to see if the firmware update will fix them. I have done this a few times and no dice. Also one of them never indicates that it is fully charged it just says red in the charger. I am on my 4th round of emails with Combustion trying to get approval to send them in for inspection. I’m sure they have been overwhelmed by this little mistake but it’s becoming tiresome and THE season is approaching where I absolutely must have something and my corded smoke from thermoworks isn’t going to cut it. Am I dependent on them? They were pretty awesome when they worked 😭😭😭.

chefchrisyoung ? I am also very happy with my Combustion . I am not sure what else to offer here except my sympathy for a frustrating experience. I need to check on the range the next time I do a cook!

Sorry to see this. I hope they resolve the issues. If not and you need to go another route, please take a look and TempSpike. Great product and support.

I must mention that the one that I did get to work has since blipped out and none of them connect to the display now. . . 😨🫣☹️🔥🔥🐿️

Ouch! Hope you get it resolved. At least you *do* have the Smoke to fall back on while you wait on Combustion to get these going. I use the Smoke with my kamado all the time, the lid/body gaskets close over the wires without causing any smoke or air leakage.

MsTwiggy I imagine that the ceramic has some wifi blocking properties, but probably not as bad as a metal grill dome when it's closed. I don't have anything BUT wired thermometers, so can't say for sure, but the engineer in me is thinking that...

jfmorris only one way to find out. Got to get some working CPT’s (combustion predictive thermometers) and try it out. I don’t think they use wifi, they call it MeatNet 😳 where each device acts as a node in an ad hoc network. “Each node increases the unobstructed range by an additional 330ft”. Unobstructed is the key word here. 🔥🔥🐿️

MsTwiggy I'll let the people with Komodo Kamado grills buy all the Combustion thermometers and test them haha! I just went to the website, and didn't realize they were so expensive. I'm happy with my several wired thermometers at that price. The times I've wanted a wireless probe are when running the rotisserie, but so far, I've been able to get a feel for when to start checking for doneness when spinning chicken or turkey.

I was also an early adapter, and I bought the range booster when it came out, and it helps. I have found that placing the booster about 10" above the metal table it sits on helps with the range. When it works, it's great, but it doesn't always work.

But one of the thermometers has quit, (haven't contacted Combustion yet), even after following the procedure outlined on their site.

Oh Noes RonB !!! They recommended to me to fully drain the battery by leaving it outside if its charger for 48 hours. This resets the microchip back to the firmware it came with. Then after you recharge it go to firmware update in the app and the rest should be history. If that doesn’t work then it’s time to reach out 🔥🔥🐿️

I just received a second email from Combustion. The first asked me to try some stuff I had already done. I emailed back and just received a second email saying that they would send a replacement. There will be a delay of several weeks as their QC testing of the latest batch revealed some problems.

            Great customer service.

You gotta trust electronics to fix themselves.....says the guy with a $200+ starter for when the 2007, 122,700 miles one goes dead.

Meater+ for me. I will learn to deal with its limitations. Wired probes blow, out loud.

Wires can be a pain, I'd like another year of these out before I try one in my double walled vertical smoker....I guess that is just how I am....wired.

Sorry you are having issues, hope they get them resolved. I am getting more frustrated with all this technology that just doesn't work from autos, home electronics and websites. That's why I love my 1976 Scout, no electronics other than a battery and alternator and it works to this day without issues.

              Had a Honda Trail 90.
Turned out it had a weep hole on bottom of points cover. Discovered that when going thru knee deep puddle. Took a bit to sort that. But dried it out, ultimately sealed with some silicone.

That's the problem with weep holes, they work both ways. Jeep has a weep vent in the front end and guess what, yes water gets in and destroys components.

yakima I had to smile on your post as it brought back good memories. I had a trail 90 for years. I commuted on it for years as a student and even later. Those were reliable machines. Everyone wanted to borrow it when they went to take the exam for their motorcycle license, especially those who had larger motorcycles. It could fly through the exam course with all the cones with ease.

I received my replacement CPT's yesterday. I was able to update the firmware and they still work. Going to send one to my friend and then test the signal strength during the next cook in the Kamado.
