    South African Braai

I just returned from a three week vacation in South Africa. The Afrikaner name for BBQ is Braai and it is a big deal in S Africa. They dont appear to believe in themometers though 😁. I wanted to try some of their local game but I wasnt sure how to cook it. I ended up treating it as a lean game meat and cooked the Ostrich and Springbok (antelope) indirectly, then finished it with a reverse sear. It turned out fantastic - some of the tastiest, most tender meat I've had. My son really loved the Ostrich! I forgot to tKe pictures of the interior medium-rare meat, but here is the plate.

I had ostrich once and was surprised how good it was. I expected a poultry type taste.

Cool cook - lots of folks hunt pronghorn antelope in the mid west; am guessing that would be similar to the Springbok.

Pronghorn are not actually antelopes, even though they are sometimes/often called that here, where they are indigenous. They are zoologically unrelated to true antelopes which come mostly from Africa. I have no idea if they have similar taste.

    Way to represent!

Cool cook, I would love to try springbok. I bet it is really good game meat. I have two springbok pillows in my sofa, that's as close as I've gotten to one so far.... It's a beautiful animal.
