I always save my ham bones and extra pieces of ham to make ham and bean soup. I buy cheap hams and smoke them on the stick burner. They come out amazing they take the smoke really well. Trying to get the freezer a bit cleaned up and make room for new things. So I took out the ham bone and made some soup.
Pretty straight forward. Simmer ham bone in water for 6 to 8 hours along with some bay leaves and vegetable trimmings that I saved.
Soak the 15 bean bag of beans overnight. Next day add the beans , ham, carrots, celery, onions, garlic. cabbage to the ham broth.
Lots of fresh cracked black pepper and kosher salt to taste.
Turned out pretty dang good if I say so myself!
