    Smoked Jackfruit Sandwich

I broke out the green veggie grill to smoke some jackfruit.

I shaped the jackfruit into a loaf and covered it in Memphis Dust

I made a sweet smokey bourbon BBQ sauce that I brushed on at the end of the smoke.

Then I "pulled" it and mixed it with more BBQ sauce.

I toasted the bun, spread mayo on both sides, added dill pickles, grated jicama, the jackfruit, caramelized onions, and cabbage slaw.

I gotta say it was very good. This would be a great vegetarian option to serve along side a pulled pork option.

I'm assuming you smoked it to 165 degF. I've never had jackfruit, but from what I read it has the texture and taste of pulled pork. Is the dominant taste profile pretty sweet?

Yeah, I took it to about 160. But no it's not sweet without the BBQ sauce. The texture is pretty pulled pork like though but softer. I could also see making it spicy instead of sweet.

You want unripe jackfruit for this kind of thing.

Why don't you just buy a Jackfruit? Good looking sandwich btw.

Because I read processing is a difficult and laborious. Jackfruits are also very large. I bought unripe processed jackfruit. I hear it's often sold in cans.

Are those the ones where they have to put up nets around the trees so when they fall they won't hit the ground and explode?

I had jackfruit from a road vendor in Jamaica earlier this year. Very large and would definitely take some time to process.

It took the guy a few minutes just to cut us a small slice and dig out a small bag of fruit for us.

Ripe it it definitely has a unique flavor and texture.
