There's a campground at a national park not far from me that has fire rings with heavy grates on top. I may have to MacGuyver something up next time the kids and I* go camping there!

* The wife sleeping outside in a tent ain't happening, so she gets some quiet time at home while we are out.

may be hard to keep temps that way. the "dig a hole" method works well because the ground is such a great insulator of heat. we literally just threw foil on top and secured it down with some soil to keep things a little more air tight, though while leaving some openings for air to pass.

lol we literally crap in a hole at this location. no plumbing, electricity, and a hand pump well. cook most things on the camp fire.
