Spatchcocking is the way to go. An 18 lb bird will fit but spatchcocked, it will be tight. But it doesn't have to sit totally flat in the cooker.

I've done an 18# bird and plan to this year. My issue is the gravy pan with liquid in the egg seems to really not let it cook as well as it should. So, I start it with that in-place or warmed up and then often take it out 1/2 way and put it on the gas grill. I also have a 10# bird quartered so I can cook drums and wings the next day!!1
