As the saying goes, it is what it is. In the world of electric grills, Current's performance and useful features are a cut above.Last edited by Max Good; September 12, 2024, 02:29 PM.

The Medal rating is always tough, since so many factors come into play. Great, good, good for the price tier, good since it's better than what's already in this group, great even though it's pricey, good but would be great if it weren't so pricey, etc etc. It's tough to be as fair as possible given the wide variety of factors in modern cookers.

Interesting read. Personally, I'm not sure it deserves the Gold rating. I'd lean more toward a Silver - seemed to have some pretty significant limitations. It fits a niche, but gives up some real performance in order to make those compromises. But then, I'm not a reviewer, just an armchair pseudo-cook. lol
Thanks to Max, Clint, and all the other reviews who slave tirelessly and give us honest, thorough reviews!

Nice job on the review.
I wonder what the real cost difference is vs. gas? It might replace that someday.
Worrying to think I would ever lose the ability to cook with live fire, that would not be acceptable. 😁

Glad to see this performs as well as it does on a 120V 15A circuit. ItsAllGoneToTheDogs that is really the challenge, and as an electrical design engineer, not one batteries can really handle, or capacitors. While you might get away with pumping a charge from an old school lead acid battery into a heating element load, the battery is going to heat up, and degrade from fast discharge cycles. More modern technologies like Li-Ion won't handle it at all, due to danger of the battery overheating and exploding...
The real issue is the 120V single phase system in the US is just not conducive to heating appliances, and few people will have a 240V dryer style plug out on their patio where they grill. Most of the world uses 230V ac systems, +/- 10V, for the outlets in common use in homes.
When I bought my house in 1996, the prior owner left behind a hot tub... running from a 120V 15A using a heavy duty extension cord! That thing took 8 to 12 hours to heat up from cold! I pulled the cover off the panel, changed it over to 240V 30A, and ran a new circuit, and the time to heat to 105F was down to less than 2 hours from cold. It had an option for 50A service, but I never pursued re-doing the circuit to 50A from 30A, due to the cost. But I bet heating would have been down to just over an hour.

I'm sure their engineers are smarter than me, but surely some sort of capacitor would allow for a quick spike of power to heat up faster or recover. Maybe even have high temp cooks run off a battery that trickle recharges overnight... regardless I'm glad that thing performs better than the only electric grill we ever had (I think it was Charbroil) that thing couldn't cook bacon let alone a burger.

Sneak Peek: Current Model G Dual Zone Electric Grill
Enjoy a Pitmaster Club-exclusive advance look at our latest grill review, Current Model G Dual Zone Electric Grill.
Live fire cooking will likely not disappear, but may thin out in our backyards, just as gas cans and internal combustion engines are thinning out in our garages, driveways, and sheds. For those who cannot have live fire due to restrictions, and for those who choose not to have live fire for whatever reason, Current has a lot to like. Read our review using the link below:
