    I'll start to bring my charcoal inside to warm up a day before a cook.
    I BBQ/smoke all winter, no big deal to me except when its really windy.

      I find that lighting the charcoal fixes the problem of it being cold.

        No change in any of my procedures smoking or grilling in the cold. Only difference is fuel consumption and I usually get a better smoke quality.

          And don't forget: If it's cold outside you need to wear appropriate clothes. I appreciate you sharing this article so that I would know this. That probably explains the frostbite I got last year smoking a brisket in my swimming trunks and flip flops in January. This year will be so different!

            glitchy I was thinking the same thing. Although the "expert" either was misquoted a lot or is not much of an expert. I did think 18 inches was a bit close, but I would be inclined to correct the number, not the units.

            Probably depends on the type of grill I guess. I cooked with a gasser for years that was never probably more than 18" away from the house and never had a problem...not that I'd recommend that to others as best practice. If you never clean your grill, you probably should stay 18 feet from a structure. Charcoal on the other hand, no way I'd light it that close to the house.

          16 foot margin of safety is for starting a grill with gasoline. As not recommended.
