    A tool restoration

Some time in the distant past, (maybe 35 to 40 years ago), I made a small hand plane. I found it in a shed a while back and it was in sad shape. I finally got around to restoring it over the last few days, and here it is. It's made from bubinga and maple and I shaped it to fit my hands, so it does feel good when using it. I made a small wooden mallet to use to adjust the blade, but that has not turned up yet. It's close to life size in this photo.

It's 3.6cm long on my phone. Not sure my hands would jive with that.

Love stuff like this, tools from a simpler time.
I brought a wood plane a few years ago for a project, whadda pieca junk....
Didn't even return the thing, threw it out, saved another potential buyer from a day of misery.

Lie-Nielsen would be envious of that little plane.

Thanx, but I'm not sure LN would be impressed. I just wanted something to fit my hands.

I like to tell some of the younger apprentices I work with, "Never underestimate the power of a good hand tool". They are perplexed when they see a hand saw, plumb bob and sharpened chisels in my tool box.

            Beautiful hand plane btw..

Now, where did I put that treasure? I inherited an old hand molding plane from my Dad, but I think it was originally my Grandfather’s.

I have my grandfather's tool box. He was a carpenter born in 1880 and lived to age 95.

My grandfather was a master carpenter, specialized in church alters and interiors.
Very gratifying to be able to go into many churches in west Toronto and see his craftsmanship.
Most of his tools were handmade for the intriquette custom work he did.
My uncle still has his tool box with all its treasures.
