    Excel time formula

Anyone have a formula I can replicate in 1 hour increments to spit out random times, such as 1430 - 1530 --> 1502 ???????

    #2
    a random number generator?
what model replicator do you have?

      It’s a two tool process, J.B.

the formula you want is RANDBETWEEN(a, b)
the trick is using the format tool to make the output work as time, rather than just a regular number.

        Try this --

        =TEXT(RAND()/24+A2,"HH:MM")

...where A2 in this formula is the cell that contains the initial start time. The "RAND()/24" part of the formula calculates a random number of minutes within a 1 hour period. Those minutes are then added to A2, the initial start time. When I tried this, I got these results --

        Start time Random time
        14:20 14:49
        15:20 15:44
        16:20 16:34
        17:20 17:31
        18:20 18:23
        19:20 19:46
        20:20 20:23
        21:20 22:10
        22:20 23:18
        23:20 00:03
        0:20 00:22
        1:20 01:42
        2:20 03:18
        3:20 03:38
        4:20 04:34
        5:20 05:52

=A2+(RANDBETWEEN(0,60)/(60*24)) place this formula in column B and you will add a random number of minutes bewtween 0 and 60 to whatever time you have in column A

Here's what it might look like in a spreadsheet

Thought I had the time format but it spits out 12am for a time between 1430 and 1530.

Excel make working with time a bit difficult. Internally, Excel handles time values as a decimal number between 0 and 1. Think of it as a fraction of a day. Your 1430 time looks like 0.60416667 to Excel and your 1530 time looks like 0.6458333. Another way of looking at it is that a time of 1430 is 14.5 hours which divided by 24 hours yields 0.60416667. Hope this helps.
