    A Skunk Story

    A skunk story....

So, I visit some friends (Identical Twins) for their 64th birthday at a local watering hole here in Forest Park IL. Of course I have a couple of beers to celebrate their Birthday and watch the Bears lose.

I get home and of course the dogs have to go out. Rather than just let them out in the back yard, I decide to take them for a walk.

I am on the home stretch, one block away, there is a house under construction with a dumpster in front. The dogs go crazy and drag me around to the other side where I can't see. But they were on leashes so they were first.

As I round the big 30 yard dumpster, there I see Pepé Le Pew with tail up. Roxy and me got slightly blasted by this fricken skunk. My little dog Layla was mostly unscathed.

    "Oh...the Humanity" ...the smell....Talk about chemical warfare...OMG...

So Roxy, Layla and I all had to take bath and scrub with Hydrogen Peroxide, Baking soda and Dawn dish soap.

My awesome neighbor was kind enough to run to Wallgreens at the last second and buy a whole gallon of peroxide.

We were very lucky we didn't get the full blast of Pepé Le Pew
Anyhow, it seems this adventure is over.. In the end no harm...well maybe a little bit of foul.

One of my biggest fears. Sadie is only 10 pounds so she's not dragging me anywhere I don't want to go, but there are a few Pepe Lepews wandering about my neighborhood at night. So far, I have been lucky enough to see them soon enough to give them a wide berth, but I fear one of these days we will accidentally sneak up on one.

From now on I am keeping an emergency skunk kit. I was very lucky that I was able to not let my dogs or me for that matter from touching anything in the house except in the bathroom. My foyer (in front of my front door) still stinks and you can smell it in in the air down the block. Fricken unbelievable.

Hours before I shot my first deer I'm laying on the ground taking a nap on open ground on what we called "The Hill." I open my eyes and feel like something is watching me. I look up and a hawk is circling overhead, that's not it, I roll over and look up and a skunk is about 10 yards from me trying to figure out what to do. I high-tailed it to the deer stand.

Many years ago I was sittin' next to an old, unused barn keepin' an eye on a decrepit old apple tree that only had enough energy to put out a few apples, hopin' a deer would come with bow range when I heard a rustlin' around the corner of the barn - maybe 10'. It didn't sound like a deer, and I thought it was a squirrel, but it was a skunk. It walked by me less than 10' away and never saw me. I've been almost that close to bears and was never as scared as I was watchin' that skunk.

Milk, tomato juice, detergent....they really don't work. However, try Poop-Pourri. It is oil based. Spray it on clothes (never tried it on dogs) and/or yourself. For articles of clothing spray them liberally and let them sit outside in sunlight for a day or two and wash with no other clothing. If spraying on yourself, wash with a scrubbing soup (Fels-Naptha) right after spraying.

Kind of late now for that. The peroxide-baking soda concoction seemed to have worked, along with soap, water full bath and shower. We’re very lucky we didn’t get the full blast.

When we lived in the Bay Area we shared a house with a friend of ours. He had two dogs and a goat. The dogs loved to ride in the back of the truck and the goat had separation anxiety when I took them, so eventually the goat started going with us. One night the dogs cornered a skunk and got the full effect. We took them to a pet store, PetSmart or Petco, that had a DIY dog wash in the back. We bought some skunk shampoo and the staff cheerfully allowed us to wash the dogs. After the second dog was done there was still time on the meter so Mike told me to go get Dingleberry. When the water hit the goat you would have thought we were pulling her hooves off, she screamed bloody murder. When the meter finally ran out, we dragged two wet, and still smelly, dogs and an unhappy goat out. The store had cleared out of customers and the staff was giving us the stink eye.

We had one living under our front porch. It got trapped in our garage one night, luckily Mrs. H heard it scratching around and we let it out. Spread a few mothballs around under the porch and in garage. He moved on.

Yep, skunks are a problem in our rural area especially in the fall. Our dog got skunked one night last year, panicked, came running and (40 lbs of her) jumped into my arms so I got skunked too! Miserable for both of us. We keep a supply of feminine douche (recommended by a pest control pro) to wash it off.

I trapped and relocated seven of the little critters last year. Have had a few harmless encounters so far this season.

Our Husky got sprayed last spring, luckily a glancing blow to the neck.
First our neighbour who has a Goldie said he used toothpaste and coke....didn't work
Called a Vet who gave us the peroxide-soda-Dawn fix which worked great after 3 applications
Next morning poor Rey was a matted mess because of the toothpaste, brushed her for hours.
Whenever she gets wet you still get a hint o stink from her neck.

If you have a Weber Kettle, you need the Slow 'N' Sear

                      slow n sear

The Slow 'N' Sear turns your grill into a first class smoker and also creates an extremely hot sear zone you can use to create steakhouse steaks.

The Good-One Open Range is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker. By placing the heat source behind and under the smokebox instead of off to the side, Open Range produces even temperature from left to right, something almost impossible to achieve with a standard barrel shaped offset.
