One of my uncles used to tell me that my DNA must have been stunted or something; that is all I need to know...

I am more tempted to do something like this for the mixed breed dog we adopted as a stray than I am for myself. No telling who will hack into that database, or who already has. Pass the foil hats, please!

I have never been tempted to have a DNA test. Knowing my family tree back just a few generations is enough to let me know I'm 100% Hillbilly but stuck in the flatlands for now. Any one who is several generations removed from immigration is probably an American mixed breed like me. Consider that I have 4 Grandparents Who each had 2 parents who each had 2 parents. It don't take many generations to have a huge number of ancestors.

There are other testing services out there, besides the ones who advertise, that take privacy very seriously and never publish any results where they can be shared with the public. And they allow your samples and results to be destroyed on request. Our family group started testing in 2009 with one of the those companies and have reached almost 100 male participants. If you are interested in genealogy it can be a great tool to distinguish various branches of families, even which brother of a large family, is your direct ancestor. As with any tool some have bent it to serve other purposes but with a little research you can prevent the likelihood of that happening.

My wife who was a history teacher makes a very valid point... they give you your history, but at what point/date? There were SO MANY migrations all over, when exactly are they pin pointing your roots to be from a specific country?

Personally, I don’t think the DNA tests are worth much. Besides, you get your “results”. Ok. Now what.

That's kind of my viewpoint too. I can pretty much guess I am 11% this, 4% that, 9% this, 43% that and so on. If I see it on paper it doesn't really enlighten me any further, just makes me a little poorer..I dunno, I'm a curmudgeon.

So, one of the tempting aspects of it relate to health and nutrition. How many copies of AMY-1 determine your ability to digest carbs. Mutation of another, your likelihood of Alzheimer’s based on dietary fat intake. And so on.

The privacy and security outweigh my desire to know, tho.

I just got my results and it said that I'm 3% Post Oak and 2% Apple Wood. Traces of Kingsford Blue.

Might want to lay off the wood chunks and consider cooking indoors this weekend.

I've now had 2 clients who were tested and later learned that they weren't who they thought they were - as in their mom's had extramarital affairs and the men they knew as their dad's turned out not to be. They were contacted by strangers asking "how is it we share 13% DNA (that's first cousins) and I've never heard of you?"

My sister did it. I don't remember which one she did. We were looking it over and there was a pull-down that said confidence or something like that and it was initially set at 50%. So it would be at the level of a coin toss in other words. That one was whatever percentage each of British/Irish/Scandanavian. When we set the confidence level at up to 70% all it said was European. So she paid $100 to find out within a coin toss where we might have come from and with any reasonable confidence that we came from Europe which we already knew. I think I'm saving my money.

The Good-One Is A Superb Grill And A Superb Smoker All In One

              the good one grill

The Good-One Open Range is a charcoal grill with an offset smoke chamber attached. It is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker. The grill sits low in front and doubles as a firebox for the smoke chamber which is spliced on above and behind so it can work like a horizontal offset smoker only better. By placing the heat source behind and under the smokebox instead of off to the side, Open Range produces even temperature from left to right, something almost impossible to achieve with a standard barrel shaped offset.

The Swiss Army Knife Of Thermometers

              Placeholder

The smart folks at ThermoWorks have finally done it: The Swiss Army Knife of thermometers, two in one. Start with the industry standard food thermometer, the Thermapen MK4, (Platinum Medal winner) truly instant (2 to 3 seconds) precise (+ or – 0.7°F). Then they built in an infrared thermometer ideal for measuring the temps of pizza stones, griddles, and frying pans (also great for finding leaks around doors and windows in your house).

              Professional Steakhouse Knife Set

              masterbuilt gas smoker

Our founder, Meathead, wanted the same steak knives used by steakhouses such as Peter Luger, Smith & Wollensky, Morton's, Kobe Club, Palm, and many others. So he located the manufacturer and had them stamp our name on some. They boast pointed, temper-ground, serrated, high-carbon stainless-steel, half-tang blades with excellent cutting edge ability. The beefy hardwood handle provides a comfortable grip secured by three hefty rivets. He has machine washed his more than 100 times. They have never rusted and they stay shiny without polishing. Please note that we do not make, sell, or distribute these knives, they just engrave them with our name.
