    Could this be good news?

My phone has rang several times today. The Caller ID states "AT&T Scam Alert". Hmmm, better not answer that one. A voicemail is left, well can't be a worry just listening to that, eh? Lo and behold it's the Social Security Administration, I'm told my Social Security Number has been cancelled to due possible fraudulent activity, press 1 for more information. I'm so relieved I did not answer, why by having my SSN cancelled I should no longer have to pay taxes or file a return. It should mean no more government intrusion because I'm no longer acknowledged. I find this good news, so why did the caller sound like it was a bad thing?

You would think by now everyone living in the States would know that by now and the callers are wasting their time. But sadly I still hear stories of people falling victim to the scam.

Somehow I think he knows that and is being tongue in cheek. That said, I got the exact same thing only they said my SS number had been ripped off and that the thief had used it to make untold amounts of purchases and that I was liable unless I cooperated with whoever this scam artist was. I just hung up.

Got a bridge in Brooklyn I need to sell you ??!!!

I kept one of them on the phone recently just for fun to see where it would go. Apparently I qualified for a low interest rate so I could pay off my credit card debt. He quickly got around to asking for my credit card number. I asked him how often people actually fall for this. He told me not to worry, no one can use my credit card unless they have my pin, that my credit card number is useless to anyone else and that anybody could easily get the number any time I use it. After stringing him along for a while, he eventually realized I was messing with him. He started swearing at me and telling me to place certain objects into certain orifices, then hung up. It was fairly amusing.

I had a similar call recently as well on our land line. When they got to the point of asking me for some personal information I told them I didn’t know because I had just broken into this house to rob it. They hung up pretty quick.

I was at a friend's house one day when he got a call. All I could hear was his side of the conversation. It went something like this:

Hello? Really? Oh thank God, this is wonderful. You don't know how much I want a credit card, thank you, thank you, thank you. My address? Well, I don't actually have a place to live yet, I'm staying with friends, but I really want this card. I don't have a job yet, I was just released from jail, but I really, really need this card.

This went on for about 15 minutes. He got this guy to try every conceivable way to get him a card, but each was met with a more impossible situation. At the end the guy was actually apologising that he couldn't get him the card, meanwhile my friend sat there with an evil grin on his face. It was classic.

I was selling a car and was contacted by a scammer trying to get some personal information. I strung him along through several text exchanges. He finally figured out I was onto him when I told him I was currently living in the car and needed to get all my belongings out before his "pickup man" could take it. I also asked if the pickup man could deliver me and my belongings to a nearby overpass. He just texted "okay" then stopped responding. That was a good time.

I still have one, because you should actually have one for emergency use. If the cell tower loses power you are SOL calling for help in an emergency, but the power for a land line phone comes from the phone line itself. If you have a choice of any phone carrier other than CenturyLink you can get one for less than $20/month, which is a cheap insurance policy to be able to call fire rescue or an ambulance.

The Good-One Open Range is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker.
